When it rains and one sees nobody, that is a sad state of affairs. La Righi is common, flat-nosed, broad, ordinary. I saw no one but her and then Madame de Mirafiore. The races are tomorrow. If that is all I get for the thousand joys the cards promised me in Florence! I am going on with my portrait. Marcuard came in the evening. Ah! how dreadful it is to know nobody. People arrive in a town with letters... and as for us!
Ah! Lord, forgive me my complaints. I know it is a sin, but forgive me and deliver me.
God keep every honest Christian from finding himself in Florence as I do, having seen its artistic sights and unable even to see them again for want of a companion!
I feel almost ill... they say I shall see Larderel tomorrow; I do not wish it.
The memory of my tears on the day he left makes me laugh. To think it was I who wept in front of everybody!
Nothing ails me, but I am frankly bored.
