One could not imagine who, for these three days, has occupied my mind — who it is I think of, who seems to me full of interest and for whom I feel a kind of whim of sympathy, of pity, and of curiosity — not to mention a sort of interest sufficiently strange and not entirely calm. I saw his portrait three months ago at Nice: he is astride a chair, arms crossed with indolence and caprice. The features are delicate, the eyes tender and cunning, while the mouth and chin have something of the ferocity, the obstinacy, and the air of omnipotence of Peter the Great.

On ne saurait imaginer qui, depuis trois jours, m'occupe l'esprit, à qui je pense, qui me semble plein d'intérêt et pour qui je sens une sorte de caprice de sympathie de pitié et de curiosité, sans compter une espèce d'intérêt assez étrange et moins calme. J'ai vu son portrait, il y a trois mois, à Nice ; il est à cheval sur une chaise, les bras croisés avec indolence et caprice. Les traits sont délicats, les yeux tendres et rusés, tandis que la bouche et le menton ont quelque chose de la férocité, de l'obstination et de l'air de toute-puissance, de Pierre le Grand.

You know or do not know that, having come upon an engraving of the great Emperor and reread his history, three or four years ago I adored him for three days — in contempt of the Duke; or rather, no... I think it was before the Duke. The engraving represented Peter the Great at the helm of a boat in peril: all the terrified crew seems in despair — some raise their arms to heaven, others hide their faces; he alone stands upright, one foot on the gunwale, one hand at the helm and the other extended as if commanding the sea, brows knitted with that expression of will and power which, at a high degree, becomes terrible — and the square, fierce chin under tight lips and thick moustaches.

Vous savez ou vous ne savez pas qu'ayant trouvé une gravure du grand empereur, et relu son histoire, il y a trois ou quatre ans je l'ai adoré pendant trois jours au mépris du duc, ou plutôt non... je crois que c'était avant le duc. La gravure représentait Pierre le Grand au gouvernail d'une barque en danger ; tout l'équipage épouvanté semble désespéré, les uns lèvent les bras au ciel, les autres se cachent la figure, lui seul est debout un pied sur le bord de la barque, une main au gouvernail et l'autre, étendue comme pour commander à la mer, les sourcils froncés avec cette expression de volonté et de puissance qui à un haut degré devient terrible, et le menton carré et violent, sous des lèvres serrées et d'épaisses moustaches.

I do not much like thick moustaches — they seem inseparable from a cigar which always burns their ends and gives them an irritable and abrupt air. The person I speak of, however, has a fine, elegant moustache, untouched by scissors or pomade.

Je n'aime pas beaucoup les moustaches épaisses, elles semblent inséparables avec un cigare qui en brûle toujours les extrémités et leur donne ainsi un air mécontent et abrupt. Aussi celui dont je parle a une moustache fine et élégante, et non touchée par les ciseaux ou la pommade.

Who is this man? He? A poor lost soul, a wretch, a madman — or a thief!1 Grand Duke Nicholas,2 the Emperor's nephew and the lover of that dirty, degrading, vulgar, and criminal woman — Fanny Lear.3

Qui est cet homme ? Lui ? Un pauvre égaré, un malheureux, un fou, ou un voleur ! Le grand-duc Nicolas, neveu de l'Empereur et amant de la femme sale, dégradante, triviale et criminelle, de Fanny Lear.

Grand Duke Nicholas Konstantinovich (1850–1918): son of Grand Duke Constantine Nikolayevich, thus the Emperor's nephew rather than son. His affair with Fanny Lear and the diamond theft scandal resulted in his being declared mentally ill and sent into internal exile in 1874 — a cause célèbre throughout Russia and Europe. ↩
Fanny Lear: stage name of Hattie Blackford (c. 1848–?), an American actress and courtesan who became the Grand Duke's mistress in St Petersburg, widely condemned in Russian society. The Imperial Family blamed her for the diamond theft. ↩
