The second day of the races!

Le second jour des courses !

Quite as many people and far more animation than the day before yesterday. I am quite elated.

Tout autant de monde et bien plus d'animation qu'avant-hier. Je suis tout en l'air.

The monkey who bored me so the other evening at the theatre is1 the Prince de Melissano. Altamura thought we had left — he arrives quite astonished and has an excellent luncheon served; after which Torlonia comes with Saint-Joseph, straight to us, without any roundabout approach. There is no question of courting, and so I am with him as I would be with a woman, without the least coquetry. He is not drunk today, which gives him a very respectable air, but which also restrains his tongue. Before, I was rather in awe of him, as it were — but now I am, thank God, perfectly at my ease. As for Saint-Joseph, he is a charmingly ugly man, exceedingly likeable, and he makes one feel as if with an old friend.

*Le singe qui m'ennuyait tant l'autre soir au théâtre est le* prince de Melissano. Altamura nous croyait partis, il arrive tout étonné et fait servir un excellent déjeuner, après lequel vient Torlonia avec Saint-Joseph, tout droit à nous, sans faire de détours. Il n'est pas question de cour, aussi suis-je avec lui comme avec une femme, sans aucune coquetterie. Il n'est pas ivre ce qui lui donne un air très respectable mais ce qui aussi retient sa langue. Avant je le craignais pour ainsi dire, mais à présent je suis, grâce à Dieu, tout à fait à mon aise. Quant à Saint-Joseph c'est un charmant laid excessivement sympathique et qui vous fait vous sentir comme avec un ami.
