It was yesterday that the soul auction of Brother Émile took place.

C'est hier qu'a eu lieu la vente de l'ame du frere Emile.

Since morning we have been searching for apartments, but here is what I write to the general:

Depuis le matin nous allons a la recherche des appartements, mais voici ce que j'ecris au general:

— Well thenit13, here I am in Rome. "Oh, how astonishing! Oh, how surprising!" There is a Russian cold here — the water is freezing in the fountains — but the cold would be nothing if it were only the cold. Since this morning we have been searching for lodgings and have seen only one. I had not the courage to go up when they pointed out to me some black, gaping, filthy, frightening hole.

- Orsu, je suis a Rome. "Ah ! c'est bien etonnant, ah ! c'est bien surprenant I". Il fait un froid de Russie, l'eau gele dans les fontaines, mais le froid ne serait rien s'il n'y avait que le froid. Depuis ce matin nous sommes a la recherche d'un logement et nous n'en avons vu qu'un seul. Je n'avais pas le courage de monter quand on m'indiquait un trou noir et beant et sale et effrayant.

In vain I look for some house bearing any resemblance to the houses of France — I find nothing but hovels or cracked columns.

En vain je cherche quelque maison ayant quelque ressemblance avec les maisons de France, je ne trouve que des masures ou des colonnes craquees.

It is no doubt beautiful, but you will agree with me that a good comfortable apartment is infinitely more agreeable, even if less artistic. I think we shall end up lodging in the Baths of Caracalla or in the Colosseum.

C'est sans doute beau mais convenez avec moi qu'un bon appartement confortable est infiniment plus agreable tout en etant moins artistique. Je crois que nous finirons par nous loger dans les bains de Caracalla ou dans le Colisee.

The foreigners will take me for the shade of some Christian martyr devoured by some ferocious tiger before some carnivorous emperor!

Les etrangers me prendront pour quelque ombre de chretienne martyre devoree par quelque tigre feroce, devant quelque empereur carnivore !

As for furniture, we shall make do with fragments of statues or bones — sublime remnants of a past that is henceforth impossible!

Quant aux meubles nous nous contenterons de fragments de statues ou d'ossements, restes sublimes d'un passe desormais impossible !

After I have settled in the Colosseum or the Forum I shall give you more details about the Eternal City.

Apres mon installation dans le Colisee ou dans le Forum je vous donnerai de plus grands details sur la ville Eternelle.

In the meantime I await a letter from you, dear General, which I know in advance will be most charming and most agreeable.

En attendant j'attends une lettre de vous, cher general, qui je le sais d'avance sera tres charmante et tres aimable.

That is the truth! Not a single habitable apartment! Where are we! Where are we? Can this dreadful city call itself a capital? We are not in Europe! Not one decent house to let! I am discouraged, exasperated!

Voila la verite ! Pas un appartement habitable ! ou sommes-nous ! Ou sommes-nous ? Cette affreuse ville peut-elle se nommer une capitale ! Nous ne sommes pas en Europe ! Pas une maison convenable a louer ! Je suis decouragee, ennuyee !

But I shall not move before May.

Mais je ne bougerai pas avant mai.

O Rome! I think we shall take a larger apartment in the hotel and stay there. On the Place d'Espagne at least one can breathe.

O Rome ! Je crois que nous prendrons un plus grand appartement a l'hotel et y resterons. A la place d'Espagne seulement on respire.

Can this really be Rome! What a dreadful mixture of beautiful antiquities and modern vileness!

Est-ce possible que ce soit Rome ! Quel affreux melange de belles antiquites et de nouvelles vilenies !

It is the eve of our Christmas.ort14 We were at the church in the embassy palace. I prayed to God. Did He hear me?

C'est la veille de notre Noel, nous etions a l'eglise qui se trouve dans le palais de l'ambassade. J'ai prie Dieu. M'a-t-il entendu ?

I am so frightened, so discouraged. At Nice I was at least at home — but here! Who knows what awaits us! Let us have faith in God — if not in Rome, where?

J'ai si peur, je suis si decouragee. A Nice j'etais au moins a la maison, tandis qu'ici ! Qui sait ce qui nous attend ! Ayons confiance en Dieu, ou en aurait-on si non a Rome ?

I have seen the façade of St Peter's. It is superb — it ravished my heart, especially the left colonnade, because no building rises above it and its columns against the sky as their background produce the most striking effect. One might think oneself in ancient Greece.

J'ai vu la facade de San Pietro. C'est superbe, elle m'a ravi le coeur, surtout la colonnade gauche, parce qu'aucune maison ne la depasse et ses colonnes avec le ciel pour fond, produisent l'effet le plus saisissant. On se croirait dans la vieille Grece.

The Castel Sant'Angelo and its bridge too, in my view.

Le pont et le fort Saint Ange le sont aussi d'apres mon idee.

It is great, it is sublime.

C'est grand, c'est sublime.

And the Colosseum!

What have I to say after Byron?

Qu'ai-je a dire apres Byron ?

I have to say that last night I dreamed of Audiffret, and pleasantly. I have sent several more letters to be posted from Nice.

J'ai a dire que toute cette nuit j'ai reve d'Audiffret, et bien. J'ai encore envoye plusieurs lettres, pour etre mises a la poste a Nice.

I am ugly and tired. I shall have to arrange everything tomorrow — everything must be arranged. I am in suspense, anxious.

Je suis laide et fatiguee. Il faudra tout arranger demain, il faudra tout arranger. Je suis suspendue, inquiete.

God! Set my mind at rest. I have all of this to arrange here in Rome.

Dieu ! tranquillisez-moi. J'ai chez moi a arranger tout cela a Rome.

The first thing to do is to take an apartment and unpack the trunks, and then make use of the letters.

La premiere chose a faire, c'est prendre un appartement et deballer les coffres et puis utiliser les lettres.
