What a dreadful journey — at Bingenbruck, I believe, we get out of the railway carriage and walk twenty minutes on foot. Then one embarks on the boat; the banks of the Rhine divert me not at all, the smoke and wind maltreat me so. One disembarks at Rüdesheim, and one waits one hour and twenty minutes, during which I do not stop crying — I could not say exactly why.

Quel affreux voyage, a Bingenbrueck je crois, nous descendons de wagon et allons vingt minutes a pied. Puis on s'embarque, les bords du Rhin ne me divertissent nullement tant la fumee et le vent me maltraitent. On debarque a Rudesheim, et on attend une heure vingt minutes pendant lesquelles je ne cesse de pleurer, je ne saurais pas dire quoi au juste.

The bad cards, the blackness of smoke, the departure from Paris — everything, everything.

At Eltville one changes conveyance yet again. Walitsky comes to meet us in a landau; in an hour and a half we arrive. A few houses between two mountains.

A Eltvil on change encore de genre de locomotion. Walitsky nous vient chercher en landau, dans une heure et demie nous arrivons. Quelques maisons entre deux montagnes.

One can never imagine the profound calm that reigns in this place. It seems to me that a grave is more animated.

On ne se fera jamais une idee du calme profond qui regne dans cet endroit. Il me semble que dans une tombe c'est plus anime.

Maman meets me — at the entrance I am presented to Princess Tcherkassky, then the Prince is presented to me. I do not think they are from high society. My mother is radiant; I am delighted to see her again.

Maman me rencontre, a l'entree on me presente a la princesse Tcherkassky, puis le prince m'est presente. Je ne les crois pas du grand monde. Ma mere est radieuse, je suis enchantee de la revoir.

After an hour I am bored; one goes to the bath, and I recount everything that has happened since their departure. Once all that is recounted I am bored again.

Au bout d'une heure je m'ennuie, on va au bain, et je raconte tout ce qui s'est passe depuis leur depart. Une fois tout cela raconte je m'ennuie de nouveau.

In the evening Maman feels slightly unwell, but everything settles; and I read aloud to Dina — from my journal — the last outdoor ball and many passages about Girofla. She was greatly amused by the reading.

Le soir maman se trouve un peu mal, mais tout se calme et je lis a Dina le dernier bal champetre et beaucoup de choses sur Girofla, dans mon journal. Elle s'est amusee a cette lecture.

A letter has arrived from my aunt; here is what she says: Danis finds Marie a perfection; poor Fiouloulou is quite in love.

On a recu une lettre de ma tante, voila ce qu'elle dit: Danis trouve Marie une perfection, le pauvre Fiouloulou est tout a fait amoureux.

Poor Fiouloulou — I know it well, and I pity him with all my heart.

Pauvre Fiouloulou, je le sais bien, et je le plains de tout mon coeur.

Saetone insistently asks for a portrait of Marie — what am I to do?

Saetone demande avec insistance le portrait de Marie, que dois-je faire ?

I write to her immediately to give it to him. And finally she says:

Je lui ecris immediatement de le lui donner. Et enfin elle dit:

— Girofla had come for one day to Nice, then set off again for Paris. He has grown more handsome after Paris and promenades in white. He drew us to go to Monaco.

- Girofla etait venu pour un jour a Nice, puis est de nouveau reparti pour Paris. Il a embelli apres Paris et se promene en blanc. Ils nous a entrainees a aller a Monaco.

Prodgers has written to Saetone that she will bring Miss Robenson to Nice for the season — the object of Girofla's passion. All this is done to monopolize Girofla again. Then she says things that are indifferent to me. In truth, until the reception of this letter I was resigned and calm — but after it, it is another matter. Girofla has grown more handsome, she says, and that brings him back to mind and I recall that pretty young man. Robenson, his former passion — all this is done to monopolize Girofla again.

La Prodgers a ecrit a Saetone qu'elle amenera pour la saison Miss Robenson, qui est la passion de Girofla. Tout cela se fait pour de nouveau accaparer Girofla. Puis elle dit des choses qui me sont indifferentes. A vrai dire jusqu'a la reception de cette lettre j'etais resignee et tranquille mais apres c'est autre chose. Girofla a embelli, dit-elle, et cela me le rappelle et *je* me souviens de ce joli garcon. La Robenson, son ancienne passion, tout cela se fait pour de nouveau accaparer Girofla.

Dash it! These imprudent words overwhelm me and I am seized with a certain jealousy. That was the last thing I needed!

Bigre ! ces mots imprudents me bouleversent et je suis prise d'une certaine jalousie. Il ne manquait plus que cela !

To the solitude, the boredom, the sadness of Schlangenbad, my aunt — without knowing it — has added this torment!

A la solitude, a l'ennui, a la tristesse de Schlangenbad ma tante sans le savoir a ajoute ce tourment !

I was being modest in saying a certain jealousy. It gnaws at my heart. Besides, I am jealous of all women who are loved. It seems to me that all hearts must belong to me.

J'etais modeste en disant *certaine jalousie.* Elle me mord au coeur. D'ailleurs je suis jalouse de toutes les femmes qu'on aime. Il me semble que tous les coeurs doivent m'appartenir.

We sup at eight with the Tcherkassys. There is not a single interesting soul present.

On soupe a huit heures avec les Tcherkassky. Il n'y a pas une ame interessante.

Walitsky makes eyes at a rather pretty German young lady and that amuses everyone — she blushes. There is also a Russian young lady, plain and travelling alone, with whom Walitsky engages in silly flirtations and remarks. There you have the amusements of this place.

Walitsky fait des yeux a une demoiselle allemande assez jolie et cela amuse tout le monde et elle rougit. Il y a encore une demoiselle russe, laide et voyageant seule, avec laquelle Walitsky fait et dit des betises. Voila les amusements d'ici.

I shall try to go to Baden-Baden. Perhaps I shall see the Eternal One there.

Je vais tacher d'aller a Baden-Baden. Peut etre y verrai-je l'Eternel.

I sing and my voice produces its habitual effect.

Je chante et ma voix produit son effet habituel.

Here one walks without a hat; one speaks to all the common riffraff about. Requiem delectabile [sic]! More provincial than the Russian countryside. Sadness, calm, detestation.
