Dimanche 20 juin 1875

All night I dreamed I was in a magnificent dark green garden, with branches hanging so low, and the foliage so dense, and the grass so very green.

J'ai rêvé toute la nuit que j'étais dans un magnifique jardin vert et sombre, et les branches tombaient si bas, et le feuillage était si épais, et l'herbe si verte.

I was in a thicket with Audiffret, and there was but a single opening — to look through which I had to pass so close to him that my face touched his. And so all night long.

J'étais dans un bosquet avec Audiffret et il n'y avait qu'une seule ouverture, pour regarder par laquelle, il fallait que je passasse si près de lui que ma figure touchait la sienne. Et comme cela toute la nuit.

Étienne telegraphs that he will be here in a few days. Worth30 announces my dresses. ==Euax!=31

De Daillens tells me she has drawn me in one of her albums as I appeared the day of the outing to the Loup. It seems my white dress fell in superb folds when I was [Crossed out: seated] on the seesaw [One line cancelled: two-wheeled cart] that Girofla was swinging.

De Daillens me dit qu'elle m'a dessiné dans un de ses albums comme j'étais le jour du voyage au Loup. Il paraît que ma robe blanche tombait en plis superbes lorsque j'étais [Rayé: assise) sur la bascule [Une ligne cancellée: charrette à deux roues] que Girofla me balançait.

I dreamed of a great many stars moving about the sky but not falling. And at each movement of each star I made a wish to marry Blackprince.

J'ai rêvé d'une quantité d'étoiles qui se promenaient dans le ciel, mais ne tombaient pas. Et à chaque mouvement de chaque étoile je formais le vœu d'épouser Blackprince.

Can one be as mad as I am! This dream furnishes me with a most amusing story involving myself, Blackprince, and Hamilton, which I shall compose to help me fall asleep.

Peut-on être folle comme moi ! Ce rêve me fournit une histoire très amusante avec moi, Blackprince et Hamilton que je composerai pour m'endormir.

And often these stories, instead of putting me to sleep, keep me awake.

Et souvent ces histoires au lieu de m'endormir me tiennent éveillée.

At the sea baths I held a coin and looked for a small beggar to give it to.

Au bain je tenais un sou et demandais un petit mendiant pour le lui donner.

— Give it to me, Audiffret suddenly says.

— Donnez-le moi, dit tout à coup Audiffer.

— What! You are the little beggar? I say — and what will you do with this coin?

— Comment c'est vous le petit mendiant, dis-je, et qu'allez vous faire de ce sou ?

— I shall keep it.

— Je le garderai.

— Ah, well then, take it — and laughing I threw him the coin, which he placed in his purse or wallet.

— Ah ! bien, prenez, et je lui ai jeté en riant le sou qu'il a mis dans son porte-monnaie ou portefeuille.

So I am going away and everyone will forget me. Yesterday at dinner they served coffee — I had a pink cup and Audiffret a blue one. He offered me his; at first I did not understand:

Ainsi je m'en vais et tout le monde m'oubliera. Hier à dîner on servit le café, j'avais une tasse rose et Audiffret une tasse bleue. Il m'offrit la sienne, je ne comprenais pas d'abord:

— Do take it, Marie, says Collignon.

— Prenez donc, Marie, dit Collignon.

— What is it? I asked.

— Qu'est-ce que c'est ? fis-je.

— Fidelity, says Audiffret, still holding out the cup. I inclined my head.

— Fidélité, dit Audiffret en me donnant toujours la tasse. Je m'inclinai.

— Do take it, says Collignon — and give yours in exchange.

— Mais prenez-donc, dit Collignon, et donnez la vôtre en échange.

— What?

— Comment ?

— But yes, Mademoiselle.

— Mais oui, Mademoiselle.

— Very well.

— Bien.

— And what does pink mean? asked Collignon.

— Et que veut dire rose ? demanda Collignon.

— Yes, said the man.

— Oui, fit l'homme.

— That is not to be said, one of us says.

— Ce ne se dit pas, dit un de nous.

— It means innocence, says my aunt.

— Cela veut dire innocence, dit ma tante.

— Yes, that's it, said Girofla — it is the best thing there is. I say nothing.

Oui, c est cela, fit Girofla, c'est ce qu'il y a de mieux. Je ne dis rien.

On my side love is impossible; on his side fidelity is difficult.

De mon côté amour est impossible, de son côté fidélité est difficile.

This evening he was to come to us, but his two aides-de-camp come alone — Saëtone and Galula.

Ce soir il devait venir chez nous, mais ses deux aides de camp viennent seuls. Saëtone et Galula.

De Mouzay, his daughter, and Lefèvre dined here.

De Mouzay, sa fille et Lefèvre ont dîné ici.

The evening passes in conversation. I am not lively — I have no one.

On passe la soirée en causeries. Je ne suis pas animée, je n'ai personne.
