Last evening at church I saw Mme Voyeïkoff; she greeted me very kindly, and I approach her — [Crossed out: amongst other things she says to me] — after the usual pleasantries.

Hier soir à l'église j'ai vu Mme Voyeïkoff, elle m'a saluée très aimablement, alors je m'approche [Rayé: entre autres choses elle me dit] après les compliments d'usage.

— Do you know that Julie is getting married? she says to me.

- Savez-vous que Julie se marie ? me dit-elle.

— No, I did not know — and to whom?

- Non, je ne savais pas et avec qui ?

— To Baron de Benkendorf, secretary of embassy in Berlin.

- Avec le baron de Benkendorf, secrétaire d'ambassade à Berlin.

— Do come to us then — come and congratulate her.

Venez donc chez nous, venez la féliciter.

— Of course, Madame, I shall come and congratulate her with pleasure —

- Sans doute, Madame, je viendrai la féliciter avec plaisir,

— but you will come too, will you not?

mais vous aussi vous viendrez n'est-ce pas ?

— Yes, certainly, etc., etc.

- Oui, certainement, etc. etc.

She urged me greatly to come — but I shall not be the first to call.

Elle m'a beaucoup prié de venir mais je n'irai pas la première.

This morning, to church again — how it tires me. The incense, the priest, the funeral chanting, the heat.

Ce matin, encore à l'église, que cela me fatigue. L'encens, le prêtre, les chants funèbres, la chaleur.

We meet Mme Voyeïkoff again, and immediately after lunch she comes to see us with Julie and stays an hour talking of the fiancé, the families, the superb family connections, the dowry (no larger than mine — three hundred thousand roubles).

Nous rencontrons de nouveau Mme Voyeïkoff et, aussitôt après déjeuner elle vient chez nous avec Julie et reste une heure à parler du fiancé, des parents, des alliances superbes, de la dot (pas plus grande que la mienne, trois cent mille roubles).

It appears that the little creature is about to enter high society through this marriage — she is allying herself to the greatest families of Russia, Belgium, and France. Need I say that I envy her? And I almost have the right to — for I am pretty, educated, well-bred, while she is ugly and ignorant. Since they have started dressing her as an adult woman she looks considerably better.

Il paraît que la petite va entrer dans le grand monde par ce mariage, elle s'allie aux plus grandes familles de Russie, de Belgique et de France. Ai-je besoin de dire que je l'envie, et j'en ai presque le droit car je suis jolie, instruite, bien élevée tandis qu'elle est laide et ignorante. Depuis qu'on l'habille comme une grande personne elle est beaucoup mieux.

On Monday they leave for Paris, and the following Monday for Brussels; there on Tuesday there will be a grand soirée at the mother-in-law's with the King, etc., etc. On Wednesday morning they are married and immediately after the new Baroness de Benkendorf returns to Paris with her husband. In Paris they will stay six weeks. Julie urges me very much to come and see her, promises I shall not be bored — I believe her. From Paris they go to London for the Prince of Wales's ball. Benkendorf introduced the Prince to his future mother-in-law while he was staying at Nice, at the same hotel — the Hôtel de Luxembourg.

Lundi elles partent pour Paris, et le lundi suivant pour Bruxelles, là mardi il y aura une grande soirée chez la belle-mère avec le roi etc. etc. Mercredi matin on les marie et tout de suite après la nouvelle baronne de Benkendorf retourne à Paris avec son mari. A Paris ils resteront six semaines. Julie m'invite beaucoup à venir chez elle, me promet que je ne m'ennuierai pas, je la crois, de Paris ils vont à Londres au bal du prince de Galles. Benkendorf a présenté le prince à sa future belle-mère pendant qu'il était à Nice et logeait dans le même hôtel, hôtel du Luxembourg.

Julie insists I ought to get married at once and proposes her brother-in-law. Unfortunately I am not rich enough to buy a husband. I shall buy one only when I have lost hope of being bought myself.

Julie assure qu'il faut de suite me marier et me propose son beau-frère. Malheureusement je ne suis pas assez riche pour acheter un mari. J'en achèterai un que lorsque j'aurai perdu l'espoir d'être achetée moi-même.

A husband, as M. Beketoff says, is a luxury animal.

Un mari, comme dit M. Beketoff, c'est un animal de luxe.

After Mme Voyeïkoff came Mme Angel, who arrived yesterday from St Petersburg where she has lost her mother.

Après Mme Voyeïkoff vint Mme Angel qui arrive hier de Pétersbourg où elle a perdu sa mère.

I drive out alone in a closed carriage; it is raining. In the evening we go to the Passion service (hair loose and flowing, black velvet hat — good).

Je me promène seule en voiture fermée, il pleut. Le soir nous allons à la Passion (cheveux flottants, chapeau velours noir, *bien).*

The church is packed; one is stifled. While the priest was reading the sufferings of Our Lord Jesus Christ — ungodly creature that I am — I was noticing the pretty Russian; he too noticed me.

L'église est pleine, on étouffe. Pendant que le prêtre lisait les souffrances de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, impie que je suis, j'ai remarqué le joli Russe, lui aussi m'a remarquée.

On our return we have the most animated conversation about husbands, marriages, all manner of things. Everyone laughs a great deal because I hold nothing back and say everything. When Maman mentioned that Zoé had been kissing her Cross—

De retour nous avons une conversation des plus animées des maris, des mariages, de toutes sortes de choses enfin. On rit beaucoup car je ne me gêne nullement et dis tout. Comme maman racontait que Zoé s'embrassait avec son Cross.

— Ugh! How horrible! — I cried.

- Fi ! l'horreur - me suis-je écriée.

— Well, my dear, says Collignon — you will do the same.

- Hé ma chère, dit Collignon vous ferez la même chose.

— I! Never. Just let him try to kiss me — I shall kick him.

- Moi ! jamais. Qu'il essaye seulement de m'embrasser, je lui donnerai un coup de pied.

Everyone bursts out laughing.

Tout le monde se met à rire.

— Naturally, since I shall not love my fiancé. But if my fiancé were Frédéric — that is another matter.

- Sans doute, puisque je n'aimerai pas mon fiancé. Ah ! si mon fiancé était Frédéric, je ne dis pas.

— But if he pleased you so, why did you not get acquainted with him? asks Collignon.

- Mais s'il vous plaisait tant, que n'avez-vous pas fait sa connaissance ? demande Collignon.

— But how?

- Mais comment ?

— You should have taken steps.

- Il fallait faire des démarches.

— I looked at him as much as I possibly could; we looked at each other — and that was all.

- Je l'ai regardé tant que j'ai pu, nous nous sommes regardés et voilà tout.

In truth I believe they really think me in love with this man. So much the better — he is no cad. I speak of him constantly and keep repeating that I am in love with him, laughing, but I say it no less for that. Dog of dogs! — let them think so; I think so myself.

En vérité je crois qu'ils me pensent réellement amoureuse de cet homme. Tant mieux, ce n'est pas un faquin. J'en parle toujours et répète que j'en suis amoureuse en riant, mais je ne le dis pas moins pour cela. Qu'ils le pensent chien des chiens ! que je le pense bien moi-même.

I love to say it and let no occasion pass to shout it at the top of my voice.

J'aime à le dire et ne laisse passer aucune occasion pour le crier à tue-tête.

All the time I am thinking of Blackprince and the devil is gradually fading. Truly, I am nothing but a madwoman — I think of everyone, and no one thinks of me. Who knows?

Tout le temps je pense à Blackprince et le diable s'efface peu à peu. Vrai, je ne suis qu'une folle, je pense à tous et personne ne pense pas à moi. Qui sait ?

Who knows? — What a foolish thing.

Qui sait ? Voilà une bêtise.

And the Duke of Hamilton — it is you I want, it is you who would suit me, it is you who would satisfy all my ambitions.

Et le duc de Hamilton, c'est toi que je voudrais, c'est toi qui me conviendrait, c'est toi qui satisfaisait toutes mes ambitions.

But God has not willed it — He will not will Wittgenstein either. And yet that one too would suit me; that one I would not deceive — no — he is handsome, he pleases me.

Mais Dieu n'a pas voulu, il ne voudra pas non plus Wittgenstein et pourtant celui-là aussi me convient, celui-là je ne le tromperais pas, non, il est beau, il me plaît.

I fall asleep thinking of him — I think of so many people. Blackprince is, I believe, on my list among those who please me; I must cross off Gericke, who has never pleased me, who is a pale, ugly creature — and of whom, and this is what sends me into a fury, people used to say I was in love.

Je m'endors en pensant à lui, je pense à tant de gens. Blackprince est, je crois, sur ma liste, parmi ceux qui me plaisent, il faut que j'en efface Gericke, qui ne m'a jamais plu, qui est un pâle vilain; et dont, voilà qui me met en furie, et dont on me disait amoureuse.

Ugh, how horrible!
