It is with unparalleled joy that I return to my work.1

C'est avec une joie sans pareille che mi rimetto a lavorare.

It is [?] the ardour of study that makes me think of staying in Nice another year so as not to interrupt the lessons. No, what am I saying — and painting, and singing? But if I find a good painting-master who truly does not go to Rome, I shall be content — or at any rate accustomed — to my other masters.2

Fe e [?] l'ardore dello studio che penso restar a Nizza ancora un anno per non interrompere le lezioni. No, che dico. E la pittura, e il canto ? Ma se trovo un buon maestro di pittura che veramente non va a Roma, sono contenta degli altri maestri contenta o anvezza.

But then I do not lose a year — I gain one; a year of study is not wasted, and if I make my debut in society at seventeen and a half instead of sixteen and a half, it is all the same. Besides, things in Nice may change, and if they do I shall spend a very merry winter — I shall not go dans le monde de Nice but shall receive people I like; and then the following winter, the winter of 1876-77, I shall go to Rome. By then, on the 25th of January, I shall be eighteen — as you see, I shall not yet be an old woman. But if things do not change, never mind — I shall do what I do now, that is all. What will be, will be.3

Ma cosi perduto un anno, no ne guadagno uno, un anno di studio non e perduto, e se commisi mio a [?] in società a 17 anni e mezzo in vece di 16 e mezzo é la stessa cosa, del resto, le case a Nizza potranno cambiare e se combiano passèro un inverno molto giocondo, non andrò dans le monde de Nice ma riceverò gente che mi piace, e poi l'altr' inverno, l'inverno 1876-77 andóro a Roma, allora avrò il 25 Gennajio 18 anni, come si vede non sarò uno vecchia, ma se le cose non combiano, aitene attora faro quel che faccio, basta, sarà quel che sarà.

We went to see Mme Sapogenikoff, and before that we went everywhere.

Siamo andate a veder Mme Sapogenikoff, e prima di questo, siamo andate dappertutto.

In the evening I spend time playing with Stiopa, who is an intelligent and amusing boy.

La sera passo a giocare col Stiopa che è un ragazzo intelligente e divertente.
