At ten o'clock I went out riding with Florence — in grey; the groom and the carriage with both mothers following. After riding down the Avenue de la Gare, we went as far as Villefranche — quite a long ride if you will. I believe this Foster is as good a girl as ever there was...
All the young women I happen to know begin by liking me and end by envying me. What a misfortune!
Perhaps Madame Howard came on Tuesday so that Maman could call on her on Wednesday — her receiving day. Maman did not go, and was glad of the excuse. But it is better this way: Maman will call on her next Wednesday, having made her wait a week. To the concert with the Fosters.
At last the questionnaire has been sent from Russia. This means there is no need to go to Russia for the judgment of the case. With this the lawsuit may end — the lawsuit may end! How? That is the question. My fingers are frozen and my cheeks are burning, and I am shivering. My God, if ever I have prayed to You; if ever I have put ardour and fervour into my prayers — count all that ardour as nothing and miserable compared to my prayer today! If I have ever done something that was good and pleasing in Your sight; if I have ever done a good deed; if I have ever had any intention of doing good — count it to me today, O Great God!
All the evil I have done — all the times I have lacked respect, patience, charity (and I have often lacked them) — even all my bad thoughts — forgive them to me, O Great God!
It is not that You count the good that I beseech You — You always count it, and with sublime justice! But it is to pardon the evil that I implore You, Lord! You do not always pardon it — without that, men would become too wicked. You punish... O Great God, if ever a prayer was sincere, mine is; if ever one of mine has reached You from out of the nothingness of men, today's is the most fervent and suppliant of all!
