It had been agreed last evening that we would go riding — Pâris, Paul, and young Lubimoff, that little creature of pitiful appearance, dressed like a footman.

Il était convenu hier au soir que nous irions à cheval, Pâris, Paul et le jeune Lubimoff, ce petit de piteuse apparence et vêtu comme un laquais.

He lunched with us, and at one o'clock I went with my aunt, Pâris, and Paul to find horses — we found them at Mouton's.

Il déjeuna chez nous, à une heure j'allai avec ma tante, Pâris et Paul chercher des chevaux, nous en trouvâmes chez Mouton.

On the road Ange asked us to take her home with us, so she witnessed the departure of the cavalcade; but I was in a carriage, even though in riding clothes — gray riding habit and top hat — good.

Ange sur la route nous pria de la conduire chez nous, elle assista donc au départ de la cavalcade, mais j'étais en voiture bien qu'en habits de cheval, amazone grise et tube, bien. Il manquait la troisième corne à la selle, chez Mouton on m'en mit une qui tournait et me gênait pendant toute la Promenade.

I believe my gray habit surprised people here somewhat — it may be the first such habit in Nice, and certainly the first since I arrived. My little horse was docile and sweet; if not for the pommel everything would have been fine. Lubimoff rides badly, and the poor thing was ridiculous when he kept saying his horse was running away with him.

— Mais pourquoi allez-vous en avant ? lui criait Yourkoff.

— But why are you going ahead? Yourkoff would call out to him.

— Ce n'est pas moi, c'est mon cheval, répondait le timide effarouché du ton magistral que prenait Pâris.

— It's not me — it's my horse, the shy, alarmed creature would reply, in the magisterial tone Pâris was taking.

Il s'occupe de spiritisme après la mort de sa femme et étudie la médecine ayant fait vœu de se faire accoucheur pour assister toutes les femmes pauvres. Plusieurs fois il a fait paraître sa femme au moyen des esprits, et ce qui est étrange au plus haut point, il a fait sa photographie lui-même pendant une de ses apparitions, elle était en un long vêtement blanc comme les fantômes.

He has taken up spiritualism since his wife's death, and is studying medicine, having vowed to become an obstetrician to assist all poor women. He has summoned his wife's apparition several times through the spirits, and — what is most extraordinary of all — he photographed her himself during one of her appearances: she was in a long white garment like a ghost.

Il y eut un peu de monde à la Promenade notamment Edy qui est ici depuis quelques jours seulement, il parut très content de voir maman et la salua avec force sourires. Il a fait connaissance par les Galignanis (au Swiss Times) je crois.

There was some company on the Promenade — notably Edy, who has been here only a few days; he seemed very glad to see Maman and greeted her with many smiles. He made the acquaintance through the Galignanis (at the Swiss Times), I believe.

Lubimoff dîne ici. Après dîner Yourkoff chante.

Le jeune veuf m'a semblé admirer le chanteur peu admirable. Quand tous furent partis, même Nina et Pâris, ils vont à Monte-Carlo pour s'apprêter à déménager à Nice, j'ai chanté avec maman, ma voix depuis longtemps retenue par un rhume et un mal de gorge était presque pas mal, que Dieu la garde et la protège, ce trésor, ce don du ciel, que Dieu la protège car c'est mon plus grand bien, mon bonheur et presque toute ma vie.

The young widower seemed to me to be admiring the not very admirable singer. When everyone had left — even Nina and Pâris, who are going to Monte-Carlo to prepare their move to Nice — I sang with Maman. My voice, long constrained by a cold and a sore throat, was almost not bad. May God keep and protect it — this treasure, this gift from heaven — may God protect it, for it is my greatest possession, my happiness, and almost my entire life.

Sur ceci je me couche, demain c'est dimanche j'irai à l'église, mais pas pour prier hélas !

On that note I go to bed. Tomorrow is Sunday — I will go to church, but not to pray, alas!

Je ne prie que chez moi le soir, que Dieu me pardonne d'être distraite dans sa maison, c'est un péché. Mais je prie ici, pas par devoir ou hypocrisie, mais du fond de l'âme et de tout mon cœur.

I pray only at home in the evening. May God forgive me for being distracted in His house — it is a sin. But I pray here — not from duty or hypocrisy, but from the depths of my soul and with all my heart.
