Florence comes at ten and we go to the market, then to bathe. She is with us in the cabin.

The ocean is comparatively calm; I enjoy my bath.

Before entering the water, Florence tells me things about the English royal family, and then about Hamilton. His wife is very jealous. I asked the younger Foster what people think of him: do they call him handsome or ugly?

"Some say he looks like a butcher, others find him very handsome; he would be handsome if he were less red and less fat."

Before beginning to speak of him I twice blushed and did not know how to say it.

While I was bathing, Merjeewsky and Plobster were watching me; because of this I floated on my back, quite alone.

In the Atlantic Ocean Marie, a fantastic maiden, Floats on her back with Gericke -- A diplomatic baron.

All alone, without Gericke -- I am not grieved about it, besides.

This little count with Plobster -- I did not expect it. He has wit, I have always said so, but he also has cunning and a wit of [Crossed out: cheap goods] malice, of riddles and of tedium.

I come out of the water before them; they are quite close, to the left. I sat on the steps and had three buckets of water poured over my feet.

Florence knows "Plobster" and "cad." The Tamancheffs have also carried away [Crossed out: Plobster] the meaning of Plobster, which they already use, and also Doria Pamphilii. Walitsky told Georges to call chairs "Pamphilii" and sofas "Doria" -- which he always did.

Florence also knows the count is in love with me. I told her that because he stole my glove, I shall not speak to him for two weeks. I told everyone, to explain that he is not courting me.

We lunch with Florence at the Plage, then go together to try on my dress, then she goes home, and so do I until dinner. I put on my aunt's Ostende hat, and coming out of the Casino it suits me.

When we return along the seawall everyone is there, and Plobster too. In this crowd I am beginning to find myself, and it is fortunately thinning.

We go to see the grand children's costume ball. I regret no longer being a child small enough to go and dance. I watch the rehearsal of Baden and think of Baden.

At home a terrible storm; they mistreat me with all manner of humiliating words. I sometimes forget, but I never forgive.
