No beautiful dream. Maman and Dina go out without me and I go back to bed at seven.Mercredi, 26 août 1874 Pas de beau rêve, maman et Dina s’en vont sans moi et je me recouche à sept heures.
Maman told my aunt last evening, ending thus: “Moussia must be delighted; yesterday they chased after her and stared at her truly to the point of importunity1.”
Maman a raconté hier soir à ma tante et finit ainsi Moussia doit être enchantée, hier ils lui ont couru après et l’ont regardé vraiment jusqu’à importunité.
Merjeewsky comes; I am not in the salon, I am not receiving. All at once everyone rushes forward crying, “Look, look who is passing!2” I lift the blinds and see Doria, but as he inspires little enthusiasm in me, I withdraw while they all throw themselves at the windows and cry out like village dogs when a carriage passes.
Merjeewsky vient, je ne suis pas au salon, je ne suis pas visible, tout à coup on se précipite en criant Regarde, regarde qui passe. On the pier, with Foster I -- but there we are set upon by that Jewish monster, cad, Rosen3. A man one cannot shake off. Before the pier I took a boat ride in the harbour with my aunt and Dina.
Sur l’estacade, avec Foster I mais là nous sommes attaquées par ce monstre juif, faquin, Rosen. Un homme dont on ne peut se défaire. Avant l’estacade je fis une promenade en bateau dans le port, avec ma tante et Dina.
I rowed, but Dina prevents me; everywhere she wants to do as I do, better than I, and it irritates me.
J’ai ramé, mais Dina m’empêche, partout elle veut faire comme moi, mieux que moi et m’agace.

With Maman on the seawall; Basilewsky walks with us until we go to dinner, with the Fosters, another old Englishwoman, the two young ones from the other day, and Baron Leiss at the Cercle des Bains.

In the middle of dinner I receive a bouquet from a lady. But Paul recounts afterwards that it was meant for Maman. Fortunately I paid no attention to the bouquet and from the first moment intended to throw it away.
Au milieu du dîner je reçois un bouquet de la part d’une dame. Mais Paul raconte après qu’il était destiné à maman. Heureusement que je n’ai fait aucune attention à ce bouquet et pensais dès le premier moment le jeter.
Towards the end each lady received a bouquet, and Leiss came to give me one, saying:

“I hope you will do me the honour of keeping this one a little longer than the other.”

He said a great many agreeable things to me and paid me a hundred compliments -- as he did Miss Foster.
Il m’a dit une quantité de choses aimables et une centaine de compliments, comme à Mlle Foster.
Maman says Foster I is courting me; I had not noticed. Perhaps in the English manner.

After dinner we come to the Kursaal. I stroll with Florence (Miss Foster) and her two brothers on the seawall. The evening is calm and beautiful. I see Merjeewsky with Plobster. He has made his acquaintance, I am certain, to tease me by not introducing him.
Au dîner on vient au Kursaal. Je me promène avec Florence (Mlle Foster) et ses deux frères sur la digue. La soirée est calme et belle. Je vois Merjeewsky avec Plobster. Il a fait sa connaissance je suis sûre pour me taquiner en ne le présentant point.
