What a strange town: around the spring, no one; in the gardens, no one; in the baths, a few Russian hippopotamuses screaming at the top of their lungs. Nothing elegant, nothing charming -- this is not a watering place! It is an ugly hole.

Quelle étrange ville, autour de la source personne, dans les jardins personne, dans les bains quelques hippopotames russes, criant à tue-tête. Rien d'élégant, rien de coquet, ce n'est pas une ville d'eaux ! c'est un vilain trou.

I was afraid to plunge into these black baths and to dry myself with this yellow linen; so I did not touch it, but used my own drawers, my petticoat, and my chemise.

J'avais peur de me plonger dans ces bains noirs, et de m'essuyer avec ce linge jaune, aussi n'y touchai-je pas, mais j'employai mon pantalon, ma jupe et ma chemise.

On leaving we met the Marquise Viviani; she was enchanted, etc. etc. and told us that at Baas's one can find a good meal. But at Baas's we found two kept women departing for Brussels, and several common and ugly men. After this wretched meal we made the tour of the Garden; I went with Walitsky and Paul to shoot at the shooting range. Then we returned. Spa is deserted; it is devastating.

En sortant nous rencontrâmes la marquise Viviani, elle était enchantée etc. etc. et nous dit que chez Baas on peut trouver un bon manger. Mais chez Baas nous trouvâmes deux cocottes qui partaient pour Bruxelles et plusieurs hommes communs et vilains. Après ce misérable repas nous fîmes le tour du Jardin, j'allai avec Walitsky et Paul tirer *au tir.* Ensuite nous rentrâmes. Spa est désert, c'est désolant.

Following her eager invitations we went to Mme Viviani's; she has a large villa, garden, hens, etc. She says that in ten to fifteen days society will arrive. Let us hope, since there is nothing else to do. We try the table d'hote, which is abominable; I go upstairs and have soup and strawberries sent up, after which I put on my gray dress and the black hat, which does not bother me with longer elastics. I find, as does everyone else for that matter, this dress adorable.

Selon ses invitations empressées nous allâmes chez Mme Viviani, elle a une grande villa, jardin, poules, etc. Elle dit que dans dix-quinze jours le monde arrivera. Espérons, puisqu'il n'y a rien d'autre à faire. Nous essayons de la table d'hote, qui est abominable, je monte et me fais servir un potage et des fraises après quoi, je mets ma robe grise et le chapeau noir, qui ne me gêne pas avec des élastiques plus longs. Je trouve, comme tout le monde d'ailleurs, cette robe adorable.

Paul comes to fetch me and we go to the concert, where I find three old men, two and a half Englishmen, a dozen Russians, and nursemaids with babies. Maman was already there, and Gambart, this king of Spa, was talking with her. He invites us Sunday to see his chateau.

Paul vient me chercher et nous allons à la musique où je trouve trois vieillards, deux Anglais et demi, une douzaine de Russes, et des bonnes et bébés. Maman était déjà, et Gambart, ce roi spadais, causait avec elle. Il nous invite dimanche voir son château.

The few creatures depart with the musicians. There is a concert of Viennese dances this evening, and at the same time the orchestra plays in the hall; from the reading room we could see this empty hall -- not half, not a quarter of a dancer.

Les quelques créatures s'en vont avec les musiciens. Il y a un concert de *danses viennoises* ce soir et en même temps l'orchestre joue dans la salle, et nous pûmes voir du salon de lecture cette salle vide, pas une moitié, un quart de danseur.

The Casino salons are superb, more beautiful than at Baden and Monaco -- at Baden excepting the new salons, which are very fine.

Les salons du Casino sont superbes, plus beaux qu'à Bade et à Monaco, à Bade excepté les nouveaux salons qui sont très beaux.

But everything is empty, deserted, sad. And to crown the pleasure, one is dying of hunger.

Mais tout est vide, désert, triste. Et pour comble de plaisir on meurt de faim.
