M. de Villemessant, of the Figaro, has rendered judgment. Maman went to see him to ask him to put my Dusautoy in his newspaper, telling him the whole affair. But M. de Villemessant proposed to have Dusautoy summoned to his office in another room, to ask him for some good reason to justify his conduct, and failing that to tell him he would have a place in the pages of the most venerable Figaro. This is what was done. Dusautoy therefore eagerly prefers to remake a riding habit rather than appear in the newspaper. Monday he will come with another to acknowledge whether the riding habit is badly done and remake another if need be. All this is trifles; three hundred francs ruined -- it is a pity, especially when one has little, no money. From the Figaro we return; Richaud comes to write some complaint or other.

M. de Villemessant, du "Figaro", a fait un jugement. Maman alla chez lui pour le prier de mettre mon Dusautoy dans son journal en lui racontant l'affaire. Mais M. de Villemessant proposa de faire appeler Dusautoy chez lui dans un autre cabinet, le prier de donner quelque bonne raison pour justifier sa conduite et sinon lui dire qu'il aura une place dans les pages du très vénérable "Figaro". C'est ce qui a été fait. Dusautoy préfère donc avec empressement refaire une amazone que de figurer dans le journal. Lundi il viendra avec un autre reconnaître si l'amazone va mal et en refaire une autre si besoin est. Tout cela ce sont des bagatelles; trois cents francs de fichu, c'est dommage surtout quand on a peu, pas d'argent. Du "Figaro" nous rentrons, Richaud vient pour écrire je ne sais quelle plainte.

At Caroline's -- Empress Caroline the First. She was very amiable, it is not before time. I ordered a white wool dress, of wool muslin with silver braid. Dina will have a similar one, in black. A few more dirty errands in town.

Chez Caroline, impératrice Caroline Ière. Elle [a] été très aimable, ce n'est pas malheureux. J'ai commandé une robe de laine blanche, de mousseline de laine avec galons d'argent. Dina en aura une semblable, noire. Encore quelques sales commissions en ville.

In the evening it was proposed to go see "Bagatelle," but in a second-tier box. It is abominable. I disguised myself. I put on a black dress, half-length, a black hat, a veil. This same dress on Maman is ugly, on me pretty. The heat was extreme; my head spun, I remained for a few seconds with my head [Crossed out: resting] thrown back and my eyes closed, but the gas and the heat suffocated me. I went out, they opened the window, the cold air revived me, and I went back in to see the end of "Pomme d'Api," which I find rather stupid.

Le soir on proposa d'aller voir "Bagatelle", mais dans une loge de deuxième. C'est abominable. Je me déguisai. Je mis une robe noire, demi-longue, un chapeau noir, un voile. Cette même robe sur maman est vilaine, sur moi jolie. Il faisait une chaleur extrême, la tête me tourna, je restai quelques secondes la tête [Rayé: appuyée] renversée et les yeux fermés, mais le gaz et la chaleur me suffoquaient. Je sortis, on ouvrit la fenêtre, l'air froid me raviva et je rentrai pour voir la fin de "Pomme d'Api" que je trouve assez bête.
