We go out late. While Maman was in consultation with one of those charlatans they call doctors, we -- I, Dina, Paul, and the deacon -- remained at the bottom of the staircase. I offered two wagers: one to Dina, hers being to go down and up four steps of the staircase without stopping until Maman returned; and the other to Paul -- I would give him five francs if he went up and down the staircase from top to bottom, eighty steps, twenty-five times. We did not stop laughing for nearly two hours. Paul gave up at the sixteenth time; the thing is, eighty steps, up and down the same number, twenty-five times without stopping is no joke. Afterward I ordered a little blue mantelet at Dieulafait's.
The rest of the day passed simply, since I do not remember how.
I forget the main thing -- see p. 242.
