Dimanche, 10 mai 1874

Another day! This time there is a pretext -- the wedding of Mlle Magarnoff, the fiddler's sister. These people wanted a grand display; accordingly Maman, my aunt, and Dina dressed up, but I am going because they are dragging me there by force, in my brown travel dress. I placed myself between Mme Anitchkoff, Howard, Swiss Times, and Bete. I was the centre of this circle -- wretched! ^[In English in the original.]

Encore un jour ! Cette fois il y a un prétexte, la noce de Mlle Magarnoff, la sœur du fiddler. Ces gens voulaient de ★l'apparat*, accordingly maman, ma tante et Dina firent des toilettes mais moi j'y vais parce qu'on m'y mène de force et en robe de voyage (marron), je me mis entre Mme Anitchkoff, Howard, Swiss Times et Bête. J'étais le centre de ce cercle, misère !

Everything was so mediocre, not to say ugly, that there is nothing to say. The bridegroom, Giovanelli, is a horror... They forced me again to go to their house after the ceremony. I stay a few minutes, then escape through the bedroom. ^[In English in the original.]

Tout a été tellement médiocre pour ne pas dire laid qu'il n'y a rien à dire, le bridegroom, Giovanelli, est une horreur... On m'a encore forcée d'aller chez eux après la cérémonie. Je reste quelques minutes, puis je me sauve par la chambre à coucher.

I had a bad walk. When I am with Papa and Georges it is a misfortune. Today I said nothing, but they made me furious and I devoured this fury without a word. It rained in the morning; I was at the Lazaret with Maman. Anna kissed my hand again, and I kissed her cheek.

Je me suis mal promenée. Quand je suis avec papa et Georges c'est un malheur. Aujourd'hui je ne disais rien, mais il m'ont rendu furieuse et je dévorais cette fureur sans mot dire. Il pleuvait le matin, j'étais au Lazaret avec maman, Anna m'a encore baisé la main et moi je lui baisai la joue.

At the band concert I saw Emile d'Audiffret, very well dressed, upon my word! But he has the misfortune of wearing a top hat on Sundays and holidays, a small hat on other days.

A la musique j'ai vu Emile d'Audiffret, très bien mis, ma foi ! Mais il a le malheur de porter les dimanches et fêtes un tube, les autres jours un petit chapeau.
