Biasini was here; there followed furious debates and heart-rending scenes, in which I had my part.
They had given a cigarette to this peasant, in our drawing room, in front of me! That made me weep, and exasperated, I withdrew to my room.
But the event of the day is certainly the disappearance of twelve hundred rubles from Papa's cashbox. It is not the money that causes the trouble, but the grief of having to accuse Trifon, whose father served us forty years, and Trifon himself has been on the carriage since he could walk.
We shall not notify the authorities, for even if it is this poor fellow who stole (what a terrible word!) we shall forgive him, for the law, so unjust at times, would pursue him, and that is what we do not want.
Trifon himself is very agitated; I truly do not know what to think.
That does not prevent me from going out (black hat, jacket looks good).
Every time Prince Wittgenstein goes riding we see him returning home toward six o'clock, galloping. I saw only his back; he has a horse of the same build as the other, as far as I could see, but grey. Why have fashions changed?
How many men would be superb in the costumes of times past who are merely passable in the clothes of today. I read everything I can find about the centuries of Louis XIV and XV, and I become exalted in an incredible way. I transport myself, and I find everything around me, and even what is not around me, vile and petty.
I blushed while warning that I would blush. Which made the princess say a few stupid things that did not even make me smile. In any case I was amused to see the prince, and I returned after buying milk, cream, butter, cheese, strawberries, and a fresh cucumber. I eat only small quantities of all these things except the milk, which I drank instead of water and wine. I came home in a most agreeable frame of mind; I believe the prince had his share, like the singing of the frogs, the fresh air, and the smell of the grass, in making me dreamy and fanciful, some days ago.
I saw his back today; it is the part I like best in him. He holds his face and eyes lowered. On this horse he appears enormous.
