(Blue dress, good.) It is very fine; I go out with my aunt and Dina. In the rue Massena we meet Patton, who stays by the carriage door for half an hour. Despite some roughness I rather like Patton; he is very gallant. We pass along the Promenade. Mme Wittgenstein is being wheeled in a bath chair -- she is ill, the old bitch. One no longer sees her august husband. I walk with Hitchcock and twice meet Lambertye
among a swarm of Spanish women. I nearly blushed, and I became breathless. Am I mad! For such a monster.
He was, however, the subject of one of the novels I invent and read to myself.
In the evening, undressed directly after dinner, I come to the drawing room where are: Maman, my aunt, Machenka, Dina, and Walitsky. I have come to speak of a very grave and important matter. I begin:
-- Well, I have come to talk a little with you. How old am I?
Then I asked where we intend to live when I shall be sixteen. In what society, and how. It will not be in Nice among the nobodies who exasperate me, who murder me!!! But no one answered seriously. That would have been too marvellous for a first assault. I hope to renew the conversation often and obtain something with God's help.
Since I turned fifteen, this thought scarcely leaves me. Indeed I weep at the idea of marrying miserably! Nothing can equal the fear I have of marrying not as I would wish. The thought pursues me, gnaws at me; I drive it away and it pursues me.
I pray God; perhaps He will have pity on a wretched ambitious girl. Instead of answering me seriously they spoke of Gritsia, of Finot, who pleases Maman greatly and whom she never ceases to praise. Bete even touched upon the sacred personage, when I said that Finot is ugly.
-- I never considered Hamilton the ideal of beauty. He has a round face, but a pleasant one.
Maman says too that he was, that he is handsome.
No, I will not speak of him! I remember him, and I shall no longer be able to calm my transports!
I see him as he is, living -- he is beautiful, noble, superb; I adore him!
