We go to Mme Howard's; I stay in the study with the children. It is a sort of serious visit -- it has been a long time since I was at theirs and they at mine. Lise, that open, frank, loving nature, threw her arms about my neck. Helene is in the drawing room; she comes down to bring me up (blue dress, blue hat, good). There were some people I do not know. A gentleman asked me what had become of the great dog that always followed me -- he had noticed it as far back as Paris. Lucarini knows him too, Prater. I did not know Prater was so well known; he is admired. I was very pleasing; I have smooth, simple manners beside Helene. I go back downstairs again; Count Markoff and Prince Gagarin and M. Tormosoff open the door.

Nous allons chez Mme Howard, je reste dans l'étude avec les enfants. C'est une espèce d'entrevue sérieuse, il y a longtemps que je n'étais chez eux et eux chez moi. Lise, cette nature ouverte, franche, aimante m'a sauté au cou. Hélène est au salon, elle descend pour me faire monter (robe bleue, chapeau bleu, bien). Il y avait quelques personnes que je ne connais pas. Un monsieur m'a demandé ce qu'est devenu le grand chien qui me suivait toujours, il l'avait remarqué encore à Paris. Lucarini le connaît aussi, Prater. Je ne savais pas que Prater fut si connu, on l'admire. J'étais très gentille, j'ai des manières unies, simples à côté d'Hélène. Je redescends encore; le comte Markoff et le prince Gagarine et M. Tormosoff ouvrent la porte.

What a week! This evening Loge, tomorrow Nagornoff. Saturday: Hernani by Mme Vigier. Tuesday a comedy at the Howards' (I thought we would not be invited) and Wednesday the Filimonoff wedding. Ouf!

Voilà une semaine ! Ce soir Logé, demain Nagornoff. Samedi: "Hernani" par la Vigier. Mardi une comédie chez les Howard (je pensais qu'on ne nous inviterait pas) et mercredi le mariage de Mlle Filimonoff. Ouf !

I was at the oriental shop, thinking to find a blue cashmere cloak for the evening, but alas! Maman was late for the five o'clock train; she goes at seven.

J'étais au magasin oriental pensant y trouver un manteau de cachemire bleu, pour le soir, mais hélas ! Maman a retardé pour le train de cinq, elle va à sept heures.

J'ai trouvé Machenka mal habillée, j'ai ouvert son corsage en cœur, j'ai mis un fichu de Chantilly, une broche, un médaillon, une fleur assortie à la robe mauve, un nœud et en dix minutes

I received from Worth a very pretty sample, which I chose at first glance for my travel outfit.

J'ai reçu de Worth un échantillon très joli, que j'ai choisi du premier coup d'œil pour mon costume de voyage.

At dinner Paul told us that Gioia's son is at Wash's. They asked him his name; he replied that he did not know it. Papa said something about Hamilton; I blushed as I have not in a long time, and I felt Maman's eyes turn to my face, which increased and prolonged the blushing. No, I have not stopped blushing!

A dîner Paul a raconté que le fils de Gioia est chez Wash. On lui a demandé son nom, il répondit qu'il ne le savait pas. Papa a dit quelque chose de Hamilton, j'ai rougi comme il y a longtemps et j'ai senti les yeux de maman se porter sur ma figure, ce qui a augmenté et prolongé la rougeur. Non, je n'ai pas cessé de rougir !
