Dimanche, 11 janvier 1874

At church (brown dress, good), Mme de Galve was there; how young and pretty she is -- she looks like she's sixteen. There is a real commotion at the church exit. Helene asked me to postpone our party on account of I no longer know what with Mme Sabatier. I made the acquaintance of the Filimonoffs. I asked to be fetched at two o'clock. The princess, Dina, and Machenka were at my place; we examined and selected my photographs. Machenka took two. I did my hair very well, but they kept me waiting and I grew impatient; I had a passable face. I wept, they had so upset me by making me wait. I escort them to the station and come back for Dina and Machenka. There are too many people and an unbearable dust; suddenly we see Sonia Antonsky, now Mme Warrodel. I told Auguste to catch up with them but the dear man could not manage it and we turn back to the Promenade. When she spots me, she stops her carriage, we stop ours -- embraces; she says she is very glad to see me, I say the same.

A l'église (robe brune, bien), Mme de Galve y était, comme elle est jeune et gentille; elle a l'air d'avoir seize ans. On fait un véritable chahut à la sortie d'église. Hélène m'a priée de remettre notre matinée à cause de je ne sais plus quoi avec Mme Sabatier. J'ai fait connaissance avec les Filimonoff. J'ai prié qu'on vienne me chercher à deux heures. La princesse, Dina, Machenka étaient chez moi, on examinait et choisissait mes photographies. Machenka en a pris deux. Je me suis très bien coiffée, mais on m'a fait attendre et je me suis impatientée, j'avais une face passable. J'ai pleuré tant ils m'ont énervée en me faisant attendre. Je les conduis à la gare et reviens prendre Dina et Machenka. Il y a trop de monde et une poussière insupportable, tout à coup nous voyons Sonia Antonsky maintenant Mme Warrodel. J'ai dit à Auguste de les rattraper mais ce cher homme n'y parvint pas et nous retournons à la Promenade. Lorsqu'elle m'aperçoit, elle arrête sa voiture, nous la nôtre, des embrassades, elle dit qu'elle est très contente de me voir, je lui dis la même chose.

-- Allow me to introduce my husband.

— Permettez-moi de vous présenter mon mari.

The good Warrodel has grown handsomer; he looks so happy -- they both look so happy that I became happy and radiant seeing them thus.

Ce bon Warrodel a embelli, il a l'air si heureux, tous les deux ont l'air si heureux que je devins heureuse et rayonnante en les voyant ainsi.

I grow tired of the drive1 so slowly; Wittgenstein in a cab, alone and drunk -- he is all red and frightening. His beauty, reclining in a landau. He is ugly and frightening when he is drunk as today.

Je me fatigue de drive si lentement, Wittgenstein en fiacre seul et ivre, il est tout rouge et effrayant. Sa belle en landau couchée. Il est laid et effrayant lorsqu'il est ivre comme aujourd'hui.

I leave at home Papa, Dina, and Machenka and take the princess; we go for refreshments at the London House then to Rumpelmayer's, from where we return on foot. She was talking to me of marriage and I bestemmianolo tutto e tutti2. Our way of living is killing me.

Je laisse à la maison papa, Dina et Machenka et je prends la princesse, nous allons prendre quelque chose au London House puis chez Rumpelmayer d'où nous rentrons à pied. Elle me parlait de mariage et moi bestemmianolo tutto e tutti. Notre manière de vivre m'assassine.

At dinner we spoke of the new year; we discussed how we should spend it, and Machenka proposed to tell the future. We recounted the different divination methods. We dwelt on the mirror, and Machenka told us gripping things; she herself predicted the future before the mirror and saw Stiopa, and several things which have not yet come to pass. She also said one sees horrors and frights; I was so animated and agitated that I could eat nothing and I felt transported. I have resolved absolutely to tell the future tomorrow, but when she recounted all sorts of frightening things I felt my courage waver and I was afraid in advance.

A dîner nous avons parlé de la nouvelle année, on disait comment nous la passerions, Machenka a proposé de deviner l'avenir. On a raconté les différentes divinations. On s'étendit sur le miroir, et Machenka nous conta des choses saisissantes, elle-même prédit l'avenir devant le miroir et elle vit Stiopa, et plusieurs choses qui ne se sont pas encore accomplies. Elle dit aussi qu'on voit des horreurs et des frayeurs; j'étais si animée et agitée que je ne pus rien manger et je me sentais transportée. J'ai résolu de deviner l'avenir absolument demain mais lorsqu'elle a raconté toutes sortes de choses effrayantes je sentis mon courage s'ébranler et j'eus peur d'avance.

I took Machenka to my room so she could show me how one places the mirrors; we were soon joined by Dina and the princess1. At last I know how one arranges these mirrors.

J'ai pris Machenka dans ma chambre pour qu'elle me montre comment on place les miroirs, nous étions soon joined by Dina and the princess. Enfin je sais comment on arrange ces glaces.

Striker no. 2 comes to give me a dance lesson; I know the Boston and the half waltz1. Poor little beast, he is in love.

Striker n° 2 vient me donner une leçon de danse; je sais le boston et le half valse. Pauvre petite bête, il est amoureux.

I burn with impatience for tomorrow evening and the divination to come.

Je brûle d'impatience pour que demain soir et la divination arrive.

I shall divine the future, but under the protection of God.

Je devinerai l'avenir mais sous la protection de Dieu.
