My diary
begun on Wednesday, 10 December ended on Thursday, 1 January 1874 belonging to me.
Rue du Temple, Villa Baquis, Nice.
First day of my new era! My misfortune, my first failure. God is... no, always good and great. I am wretched this morning; as though in a dream. At ten o'clock I play the piano and by some foolishness I imagine that at this very moment they are marrying them, so I begin to play that famous funeral march of Beethoven. Truly I am ruining myself for nothing, for I have grown ugly and I often have red blotches, or one of my cheeks burning and red. And all of it for nothing.
I am quite strange, and so timid -- I shall be so for a long time. The effect this event has on me is not sudden and terrible; it is not as though one made a great black ink stain, but as if one took that same amount of ink and spread it over the entire surface, which does not turn black but only grayish. This misfortune does not kill me, but it spreads through my whole being; it does not take away my speech or my legs or my sight, but it tarnishes me, it darkens me entirely. It has taken from me the essential thing: hope and confidence. I no longer see everything in pink but in gray.
I am very strange; I do not understand what is the matter with me.
I go riding; the riding-master M. James has left and is not coming back, but the groom rides just as well. There are a great many people on the Promenade. I go to the Howards' -- it is their reception day; I am certainly not paying a formal call, but only because I did not know where to go. I find only Aggie; I go into their study, drink a glass of water, rest -- then Helene and Lise return. Delighted to see me, no doubt; Helene peels my orange, all three kiss me vigorously, and I leave.

It is disgusting -- I passed along the Promenade several times. I do not like that.
[In the margin: (Lewin has arrived)]
At every moment I imagined what was happening there. I am not in Nice; I am far away, I do not know where. All these people I see passing do not seem alive to me, and yet each of them has both joys and sorrows. I am here, I try to picture what is happening there; at every moment I follow them, I want to imagine what is being said, where they go, all those people, that ceremony. I see them at the church. So there he is, married -- for at this hour he is already married. Married! I cannot believe it. I am dreaming. It is dreadful. I cannot believe that I have hoped for so long for nothing, that all my hopes are shattered in an instant -- in short, it seems to me impossible, impossible, that it cannot be. For I asked for it so much, waited for it so long! I am dreaming, it is a dream; when I wake I shall go to the Promenade, I shall see him, I shall see his carriage near Gioia's, I shall see him pass once more; then I shall see him at the Shoot -- he is always the same. But no! It is finished! That is what I cannot understand -- this "it is finished"! That I shall never understand. How stupid I am, how I inspire my own pity! How wretched, how pitiable, how detestable I am! I cannot bear myself!
I order ices, I come home for Cunegunda but I do almost nothing; I laugh and talk the whole time. She is very pleased that I spoke with her. I sang at dinner and Bete whispers to me:
-- Do not sing; he is getting married -- you should be in mourning.
-- Oh! Princess, what nonsense.
Truly I am weary of grieving, and I let myself go. As after a struggle in a nightmare when one can no longer defend oneself, one throws oneself to the ground and whatever happens, happens. It has happened to me several times to dream that a bear is chasing me; I run, I run, I can go on no longer, and at last I fall and let myself be devoured -- I felt the burning maw of the beast... it is at that moment I wake. But alas! I shall not wake. It is a sad reality.
And all the same I cannot believe it! It seems to me that all of this is happening beyond the earth, that... that I know nothing about it; I am mad. I...
As one can see, my wretched efforts to recount what I feel, to write. I could say nothing; I am too unhappy. And the best way to express what I feel, to describe the state I am in, would be to write nothing at all.
