I wait a full hour for my horse, in the company of Bete, who is ill and lying down at Dina's. We talk -- husbands, wives, love, the arts of flirtation, etc., etc. There are now two who say that a woman can always have the man she wants: Collignon and Bete.
If that were so -- but she explains herself: the married woman, not a young girl. I know very well that as things are a woman can always have the man she wants.
Pitou (Fortune) comes to announce that the Misses Howard are here; I say to ask them to come up -- but they are on horseback. I go out on the balcony and Helene tells me to come; the horse is waiting. To tell the truth I was not at all expecting this surprise. That man cheats -- he does not come, does not supply the right horses. Fortunately Maman arrives; I ask what I should do. I mount at last; it is four o'clock. We go to the Avenue de la Gare; my little horse Gipsy, which I ride for the first time, is not bad. I ride beside Helene, and Aggie is behind with the groom. We spoke of Mme Beketoff, that charming woman whom I like very much. Mme Howard and Helene will go next winter to Naples, to Mme Beketoff, and Helene will be taken to balls under her patronage.
Blessed Helene! Everyone seeks her out; everyone is ready to serve her -- it depends on her mother's standing, her household, and everything else. Poor me! I shall never be placed as she is.
I am jealous and sorrowful. Vain creature that I am. The ride is not unpleasant; after leaving my companions I followed our carriage at a trot, and well.
I told Helene delicately that I am very vexed at having gone; they cheat, they switch the horses on me; the bad horses fall, and they say it is because I jump -- it is always like that, my dear. I hope she understood. I have just finished my evening studies; passing through the salon I see diadia and Mme Howard. All these people tell me so often that I study too much that I am beginning to believe it myself. How strange in this world: once someone begins to say a thing, everyone repeats it, and everyone believes it. With beauty it is the same.
Solominka and Tormosoff dined with us; they are so much in love that it shows too plainly, and that is not proper.
