I go with Bete to the station at three o’clock to meet the governess (new blue dress, good). But how to recognise her? We got down from the carriage (Auguste and Saïd are in uniform) and stood near the door examining all the figures who appeared suspect and guilty of long curls and a large crinoline. We pursued an Englishwoman, speaking English and pronouncing “Hitchcock” every minute. But in vain -- no one.

Je vais avec Bête à la gare à trois heures rencontrer l’institutrice (robe neuve bleue, bien). Mais, comment la reconnaître, nous descendîmes de voiture (Auguste et Saïd sont en uniforme) et restâmes près de la porte à examiner tous les personnages qui paraissaient suspects et coupables de longues boucles et de grande crinoline. Nous poursuivîmes une Anglaise en parlant anglais et prononçant Hitchcock à chaque minute. Mais en vain, personne.

The whole time is spent at home. Paul takes the carriage and goes to Arson’s. At five o’clock, with difficulty, I managed to get the landau, and we went out with Bete. It is cold and nearly dark; however, we saw the Vigier with a bedsheet on her head.
