Lundi 15 septembre 1873

I am lazy; my alarm rings at five o'clock, I reset it to six and sleep until seven. If I am half an hour late, the whole day is ruined -- I do nothing more. That is what happens today. Neither English, nor Italian, nor Latin. Nothing, in a word. But I had a conversation lesson with Hitchcock; that is more useful than all the rest.

Je suis paresseuse, mon réveil sonne à cinq heures, je le remets à six heures et dors jusqu'à sept heures. Si je retarde une demi-heure, toute la journée est gâtée, je ne fais plus rien. Cela arrive aujourd'hui. Ni pour l'anglais, ni pour l'italien, ni pour le latin. Rien en un mot. Mais j'eus une leçon de conversation avec la Hitchcock, c'est plus utile que toutes [les] autres choses.

For the first time today I spoke Italian. Poor Michelezzi nearly fainted or threw himself out the window. I am pleased with myself; I can say that I speak Russian, French, English, and Italian. I am learning German and Latin. I study seriously. The day before yesterday I had my first physics lesson. Ah! how satisfied I am with myself. What a great happiness that is.

J'ai pour la première fois parlé l'italien aujourd'hui. Le pauvre Michelezzi faillit tomber évanoui ou se jeter par la fenêtre. Je suis contente moi-même, je puis dire que je *parle* le russe, le français, l'anglais et l'italien. J'apprends l'allemand et le latin. J'étudie sérieusement. Avant-hier, j'ai eu ma première leçon de physique. Ah ! comme je suis satisfaite de moi. Quel grand bonheur est celui-là.

I received Le Derby. I discover that the Duke has quantities of horses. The races at Baden have taken place. How I wish I were there. Nothing prevents me, but I will not go; I must study, and with a heavy heart I read the races, the horses, etc. etc. I make an effort, calm myself with great difficulty, and console myself by saying: Now let us study; our turn will come! if God wills it.

J'ai reçu "Le Derby". Je découvre au duc des quantités de chevaux. Les courses à Bade étaient. Comme je voudrais y être. Rien ne m'empêche mais je ne veux pas; je dois étudier et le cœur serré, je lis les courses, les chevaux etc. etc. Je fais un effort, je me calme avec grand peine et je me console en disant: Maintenant étudions, notre tour viendra ! si Dieu le veut.

I read this journal and my eyes shine, my fingers are frozen, and if I speak, my voice trembles. There is no doubt about it. I adore, I adore, I adore horses. They are my life, my soul, my happiness. By chance I cracked my riding crop and heard the same whistling in the air, as at the races. I leapt up -- I did not know where I was. Ah! look, it is better not to speak of it!

Je lis ce journal et les yeux brillent, les doigts sont glacés et si je parle, ma voix tremble. Il n'y a pas à douter. J'adore, j'adore, j'adore les chevaux. C'est ma vie, mon âme, mon bonheur. Par hasard j'ai agité ma cravache et le même sifflement dans l'air, comme aux courses. J'ai sauté, je ne savais où je suis. Ah ! tenez, il vaut mieux ne pas en parler !

I go riding, but the saddle is abominable; the knee roll turned and the saddle itself shifted to the left. The horse Cosaque is charming. On the promenade I see a pretty and graceful woman -- it is Gioia; I recognised her after passing her. I turn back, of course1; she walks with Soubise -- fie! From the end of the promenade I must turn back, but as I pass Tanerie, who is beside Gioia, dogs throw themselves under my horse's feet and it stops, but I beat it and it did not have time to halt fully and continued, though unsteadily.

Je monte à cheval, mais la selle est abominable, la chose du genou tourna et la selle elle-même s'est reculée à gauche. Le cheval Cosaque est charmant. A la promenade je vois une femme jolie et gracieuse, c'est Gioia, je l'ai reconnue après l'avoir passée. Je retourne of course, elle marche avec la Soubise, fi ! de la fin de la promenade, il faut retourner mais en passant Tanerie qui est à côté de Gioia, des chiens se jettent sous les pieds de mon cheval et il s'arrête, mais je le bats et il n'eut pas le temps de s'arrêter et a continué mais irrégulièrement.

-- Take your dogs; they are stopping the horses! I said to the donkey-driver, in a fury.

— Prenez vos chiens, ils arrêtent les chevaux, ai-je dit à l'ânier, en colère.

The two women were there. But I only noticed them after speaking. My voice did not fail me, and I spoke well.

Les deux femmes étaient là. Mais encore, je ne les ai vues qu'après avoir parlé. La voix ne me manqua pas et j'ai bien dit.

I must have felt very unwell to dismount, for I could barely get to Mouton's. I returned the horse with a scolding2 and got back into the carriage.

Il faut que je me trouve bien mal pour descendre du cheval, car je pouvais à peine arriver chez Mouton, je lui rendis le cheval avec un scolding et je remontais en voiture.

At the London House I go with the Beast for something, chocolate. We were speaking English and rather freely, when I noticed that the lady at the counter understood us. The Beast continued with her du...ke -- this time duke.3 I prefer "duke" to "duc." I told her how Carlo tied a pig to his foot and walked about in Baden (a story from Walitsky). She advised me to get a cow. "When you take a stroll with your brother-in-law Carlo, you with a cow and he with a pig, it will be very nice. And the duke your husband will pass and say: How, my dear, what is this madness?"4 But truly this picture is delicious. We have talked enough nonsense this evening, dear me!5

Au London House je vais avec Bête, prendre quelque chose, du chocolat, nous parlions anglais et assez librement, lorsque je m'aperçus que la dame du comptoir nous comprenait. Bête continuait toujours son du....c, cette fois duke. J'aime mieux duke que duc. Je lui racontais comment Carlo attacha un cochon à son pied et se promena à Bade (histoire de Walitsky). Elle me conseilla une vache. Quand vous vous promènerez avec your brother-in-law Carlo, you with a cow and he with a pig it will be very nice. And the duke your husband will pass and say: How, my dear, what is this madness ? Mais vraiment ce tableau est piquant. Nous avons dit assez de bêtises ce soir, dear me !
