The French professor came -- twice a week, Tuesday and Saturday. In the evening I go riding with Paul. Instead of a collar, I put on crepe, and it is much prettier. Thank God, I am beginning to ride tolerably well. I have the position and the motion; I lack only the habit and the ease while trotting! It is still a little clumsy, but with time, I hope. We met Mme Daniloff. For some time she has not come to our house; Grand-papa said disagreeable things to her following a quarrel she had with Georges. It is no great misfortune, on the contrary -- I cannot understand now how she could have been received in our home. All the same, she is a good woman, and goodness and old age efface a great deal, not to mention that she is Russian, and for that she deserves even more indulgence.

Le professeur de français est venu: deux [fois par] semaine: mardi et samedi. Le soir, je vais à cheval avec Paul. Au lieu d'un col, j'ai mis du crêpe et c'est bien plus joli. Dieu merci, je commence à monter passablement à cheval. J'ai la position et le mouvement, il me manque l'habitude et à être chez soi en trottant ! C'est encore un peu maladroit, avec le temps, j'espère. Nous rencontrâmes Mme Daniloff. Depuis quelque temps elle ne vient plus chez nous, grand-papa lui a dit des choses désagréables à la suite d'une querelle qu'elle eut avec Georges. Ce n'est pas un grand malheur, au contraire; je ne comprends pas maintenant comment elle a pu entrer chez nous. Tout de même, c'est une bonne femme et la bonté et la vieillesse effacent beaucoup de choses, sans compter qu'elle est russe, à cause de cela elle mérite encore plus d'indulgence.

Khalkionoff was with her. I stop and we talk for a few minutes. Khalkionoff says that Mouton has bought two superb horses but they are not yet trained.1 I want to see these horses; if they are very fine, I shall rent one for myself. Mme Daniloff thanks me warmly for the fan (which my aunt bought). On departing I had lost mine, and facing the prospect of terrible heat on the train, I asked Mme Daniloff to give me hers. I therefore owed her a fan; my aunt bought one in Russian leather, three times prettier than the other. I had thought so little about it all that when she thanked me, I did not know what she meant.

Khalkionoff était avec elle. Je m'arrête et nous parlons quelques minutes. Khalkionof dit que Mouton a acheté deux superbes chevaux mais qu'ils ne sont pas encore *trained.* Je veux voir ces chevaux, s'ils sont très beaux, je vais en louer un pour moi. Mme Daniloff me remercie beaucoup pour l'éventail (que ma tante a acheté). En partant j'ai perdu le mien, et ayant en perspective une chaleur très forte en wagon, je priais Mme Daniloff de me donner le sien. Je lui devais donc un éventail, ma tante acheta un en cuir de Russie trois fois plus joli que l'autre. J'ai si peu pensé à tout cela que lorsqu'elle me remerciait je ne savais pas ce qu'elle voulait dire.

Paul's horse is quite unruly2 -- it refuses to trot, wanting only to walk or gallop. This irritated me terribly. I could not maintain a steady gait. I had to stop short one moment, gallop the next; I was so vexed I was ready to turn back. But mercifully the stubborn beast obeyed, and we finished the ride amicably. Scarcely do I come in before Palajka gives me a small box from Paris. It is the photographs from Walery. I open it quickly. The two kneeling poses are affected, especially the one with lowered eyes. I am not very pleased. The main defect, or rather the only defect, is that the hair in front is badly grouped, too bunched together, and there is too much of it, which gives an air of commonness. The one of the hands is the best.

Le cheval de Paul est *unruly* tout à fait, il ne veut pas trotter, mais le pas ou le galop. Cela m'énervait terriblement. Je ne pouvais pas aller *à une allure régulière*. Je devais tantôt m'arrêter tout court, tantôt galoper, j'étais si agacée que j'étais capable de retourner. Mais bienheureusement le récalcitrant obéit et nous avons fini la promenade amicalement. A peine j'entre que Palajka me donne une petite boîte de Paris. Ce sont les photographies de Walery. J'ouvre vite. Les deux poses à genoux sont affectées surtout celle des yeux baissés. Je ne suis pas très contente. Le défaut principal ou le seul défaut plutôt c'est que les cheveux devant sont mal groupés, trop ensemble, et il y en a trop, ce qui donne de la vulgarité. Celle des mains est la meilleure.
