(Black dress, not bad). We went first into the city, to Klein's. We bought several small things — I, a mirror in Russia leather — then to look for a dress for Maman; but having made the rounds of all the respectable shops in Vienna, we found nothing pretty. We took a carriage to call on Preiss, but halfway there the wheel broke; we took another. Preiss was out (we found his card this evening).
Then to the Exposition. (Yesterday I wrote Maman a furious letter about the summer in Nice and the summer in Vienna: there is nobody, it is too early, etc. I absolutely begged her to order a saddle from Howard J.P.) We lunched at home. At the restaurant came the Countess Batiano, the friend of Mme Pristileff who laughs — she recognised me. In Vienna it is the fashion to scream at the races; all that flower of society screamed like pheasants. I am very tired; I am pale. I go to bed too late — rarely before midnight.
Dinner at the Provencaux — very good. Near us, three gentlemen, the chairman, a large Englishman — blond, red, with little eyes that make me laugh, but not ugly. During our dinner they did nothing but drink champagne; I love to observe faces, and the Englishman's is very original. I watched him grow tipsy by degrees, and finally become entirely red — the eyes, the eyes nearly invisible, and the hair a little disordered. How I love such a tipsy face! It makes me laugh — no, it makes me gay. We took a carriage, a turn in the Prater. Going to the Oscar Carre circus, we met the Emperor and the Empress; our coachman was so delighted to see them that he turned towards us, his great face all radiant.
The circus is fine; they perform very pretty tricks, but I was in a daze — until the "great steeplechase." Twenty horses, men and women. A veritable English hunt. They jumped magnificently. Then they galloped up a kind of mountain (on the stage) in a superb manner. I was awakened, excited, charmed, marvelling. I want to learn to jump barriers and ditches.
It was charming, delicious, superb, beautiful — everything I love.
[In the margin: I dreamt that I married Hamilton — very disagreeably. Then that Papa was dead.]
