At two we went to the Exposition. We saw Spain, Portugal, and France.

A deux heures nous allames a l'Exposition. Nous avons vu l'Espagne, le Portugal et la France.

At four, to the races. We took a carriage from the hotel (Grand Hotel) — a rather pretty landau (white dress). We arrived early; there was almost nobody. But little by little people began to come. Not many ladies, but all pretty and elegant. No extraordinarily beautiful dresses; however, the Saxon woman wore a very fine one.

A quatre heures aux courses, nous primes une voiture a l'hotel (Grand Hotel), assez joli landau (robe blanche). Nous arrivames de bonne heure, il n'y avait presque personne. Mais, peu a peu, on a commence a venir. Pas beaucoup de dames, mais toutes jolies et elegantes. Pas de toilettes extraordinairement belles, cependant la Saxe avec une tres belle.

My aunt is unbearable — she scolds out loud, and for nothing; she has ruined my entire day. I have never been so gloomy, so heavy as today. There are a quantity of gentlemen. I thought I should see him at the races, but he was not there.

La tante est insupportable, elle gronde tout haut et pour rien, elle m'a gate toute la journee. Jamais je n'ai ete si sombre, si lourde qu'aujourd'hui. Il y a une quantite de messieurs. Je croyais que je le verrais aux courses, mais il n'y etait pas.

These are German races — dead. Not a sound; one could not hear the ardent bettors. Everything was asleep. Not one Englishman. The Viennese men are handsome and agreeable. The Viennese women are beautiful, graceful, fair and rosy. One can see they live in a temperate climate. In Nice one burns; I overheat, I turn red, then I become pale. Here the complexion is always white and pink — not just at moments.

Ce sont des courses allemandes, mortes. Pas un bruit, on n'entendait pas les parieurs ardents. Tout etait endormi. Pas un Anglais. Les Viennois sont beaux et sympathiques. Les Viennoises belles, gracieuses, blanches et roses. On voit qu'elles vivent dans un climat tempere. A Nice, on brule, je m'echauffe, je suis rouge et puis je deviens pale. Ici l'air est blanc et rose toujours, pas par moment.

The races have a dismal air. Paul brought us his school friend Gutman — a boy of fifteen, small and ugly. We saw nobody we knew.

Les courses ont un aspect rate. Paul nous amena son ami de l'ecole, Gutman, un garcon de quinze ans, petit et laid. Nous n'avons vu personne de nos connaissances.

At the exit there were many carriages, many young men in elegant carriages, who would make a great impression in Nice.

A la sortie, il y avait beaucoup de voitures, beaucoup de jeunes gens en voitures elegantes, qui produiraient grand effet a la Nice.

The return through the Prater was brilliant, but no carriages like in Paris. The Shah was at the races. There was no ceremony whatever. Everything is cold, meagre. My aunt exasperates me; she irritates me; she kills me with her unbearable scolding. From the races to the hotel I did not open my mouth; I have never been so miserable. I am drowsy; I cannot enjoy anything. I thought I should see him here. Oh! my God, let me see him!

Le retour par le Prater etait brillant mais pas de voitures comme a Paris. Il y avait le Shah aux courses. On n'a fait aucune parade. Tout est froid, maigre. Enfin, ma tante m'exaspere, elle m'agace, elle me tue par ses gronderies insupportables. Depuis les courses jusqu'a l'hotel, je n'ai pas ouvert la bouche, je n'ai jamais ete si ennuyee. Je suis endormie, je ne puis jouir de rien, je croyais le voir ici. Oh ! mon Dieu, faites que je le voie !

At dinner in the hotel, Gutman came. Then sleep.

A diner a l'hotel, Gutman est venu. Puis dormir.
