They dared tell me that we are not leaving until Tuesday, but I will not hear of it! I insist.
I wrote the article with Miss Elder's help; she will correct it for my return from Vienna. In the evening, a walk with the Princess, then ice cream. We were sitting in the dining room when the shutter stirred, opened slowly... all three of us let out piercing screams that ended in a burst of laughter — it was Pitou. I never scream from conviction; I hear the others, so why not do as they do?
My room is a club; every evening I have someone and we enjoy ourselves. Yesterday Dina, Paul, and I laughed, drank, and smoked. I smoked a cigarette, to be properly foolish — I love nothing by halves. When I enjoy myself, it is to the full! I love too. Apart from the fact that I love Hamilton, I should want him for the further reason that he is a connoisseur and would know how to appreciate me.
I hold no attraction for a common man — no pretty face; grace, beauty of figure, the way of wearing one's dresses, and then a certain chic in the whole person, are beyond his comprehension. But those qualities are the essential thing. A pretty face and nothing more, like Helene, is nothing to me. To be sure, if the face is ugly, it matters less — but my face suffices me. Well! Here I am singing my own praises. Enough! One must leave that to others. But all these compliments and praises please me because they give me the hope that he too, perhaps, will not pass me by. After all, I humiliate myself in desiring his love so much — am I not worthy of it? One would truly think I am ugly, stupid, and so forth. If I did not love him, I should never have lowered myself to pray and to hope.
This morning Gaslina brought the portrait — it is dreadful. Maman says it is my fault — that is too much! The Princess went to speak with him. On our return they will start over — I shall certainly not sit again! And this dreadful painter dared to say that I ordered the dark hair. When the Princess told me that, I sprang from my chair like a rubber ball. Has anyone ever seen such brazenness from this man!!! I wanted to confront him, but he had gone.
