The painter came, and without too much preparation I sat down and he began. I arranged my hair rather well, having curled it last night. Blue dress. In three-quarter profile — I do not much care for the pose and I think I shall have him start over tomorrow, facing forward; it is prettier.

Le peintre est venu, et, sans trop de preparatifs je me suis assise et il a commence. Je me suis assez bien coiffee, ayant boucle les cheveux hier soir. Robe bleue. En trois-quarts, je n'aime pas beaucoup la pose et je crois que je vais faire recommencer demain, en face, c'est plus joli.

M. and Mme Howard were at our house. M. Howard says that the cholera is not bad in Vienna, that there are many people, that it is expensive, that it is beautiful, that there were races and shooting, and that there will be more in August. At last I hope that, at the very end of all the ends of all the ends, we shall go in a week!

M. et Mme Howard etaient chez nous. M. Howard dit que le cholera n'est pas fort a Vienne, qu'il y a beaucoup de monde, que c'est cher, que c'est beau, qu'il y avait courses et tir, qu'il y en aura encore en aout. Enfin j'espere qu'a la fin de toutes les fins des fins, nous allons dans huit jours !

Maman and the others went to Monaco. We went for a walk with the Princess, then to eat ice cream. We laughed like happy children — she is very amusing, a little stupid.

Maman etc. a Monaco. Nous, avec la princesse, allames nous promener, puis manger des glaces. Nous avons ri comme des bienheureuses, elle est tres amusante, un peu bete.

I am not afraid of cholera; besides, I trust in God and He will keep me safe.

Je n'ai pas peur du cholera, et puis je me confie a Dieu et Il me gardera.
