All afternoon I spent weeping, asking what dress I am going to have, and annoying the others and myself. I do not know what was the matter with me, but I was not myself — I have no dress, that is all. At the promenade (my black dress, fairly good) a fair number of people.
I ordered an ecru batiste dress, very pretty, at the quai Saint-Jean-Baptiste — that is what was tormenting me, and now I am content. So that is what my happiness depends on!! Perhaps it is by chance, and my mood changed of itself, not because of the dress; but I believe it is the dress, for I had nothing and nothing in mind, I did not know what I wanted. Now I have ordered the dress and the hat at the rue Gioffredo, the same as Galve's but in Italian straw — I hope it will turn out well.
In the evening, to church. I prayed for my happiness.
[In the margin]
At breakfast, someone named Hamilton and I blushed like an animal.
At dinner, Mlle Collignon said something that struck me: "When a woman wants a man, she always gets him."
Ah! but for that I would have to be a woman, not a child. But if only I made his acquaintance, I would pray to God so much, so much, so much, that He would make him love me. Oh! how I wish I could see him! That is a happiness I have forgotten.
