# Mercredi, 2 avril

Fine but windy. In the morning my first sea bath. I must say before anything that today is a day of events:

Beau mais venteux. Le matin mon premier bain de mer, je dois dire avant tout qu'aujourd'hui est un jour d'événement:

1. Sea baths

2. Letter from Paris about the dress

2°- lettre de Paris pour la robe

3. Madame Mortier has a grey hat

3°- Mme Mortier a un *chapeau gris*

4. Madame Vigier.

4°- Mme Vigier.

In the morning, then, I set out on foot with Maman and Walitsky (black taffeta dress, Dina's); we met the Howards who were also going to the baths by carriage, and we got in.

Le matin donc, je partis à pied avec maman et Walitsky (robe noire taffetas, de Dina) nous rencontrâmes les Howard qui allaient aussi au bain en voiture, nous montâmes dedans.

There was almost no one — the little grand dukes.

Il n'y avait presque personne, les petits grands-ducs.

The sea stormy and cold; I swam a fair amount — on the whole content. Then to the promenade for one hour only, having spent an hour at the baths; that is how I shall always do (grey and blue dress, very smart) — few people. At Madame Mortier's with Maman, we chose a hat for Dina, and I said I should like a hat like Mademoiselle de Galve's; she told me she would be receiving similar ones from Paris tomorrow. I am very, very pleased, for I did not expect it.

La mer orageuse et froide, j'ai assez nagé, en somme contente, puis à la promenade pour une heure seulement ayant dépensé une heure au bain, c'est comme cela que je ferai toujours (robe grise et bleue, très bien), peu de monde. Chez Mme Mortier avec maman, on a choisi un chapeau pour Dina, et moi j'ai dit que je voudrais un chapeau comme celui de Mlle de Galve, elle me dit qu'elle en recevrait demain de pareils de Paris. Je suis très, très contente car je ne m'y attendais pas.

Then in came the Vicomtesse Vigier, horribly painted — even hideously so. I blushed because I thought she had not returned Maman's visit, and I did not greet her; behind my back I hear her address Maman, extending her hand with extreme kindness. She asked whether it was Maman who called on her, and that she had looked for her at the Villa Meynadier, that she did not know where. And a great many other things. We spoke of hats. She said at last that she hoped Maman would count this as a visit, that it was not her fault, and that she hopes next year, etc. etc. — for she leaves tomorrow. I am very satisfied. I thought she did not wish to return the visit, but she does not seem so; she is charming, though ridiculously dressed and painted. At last we have an acquaintance from society — not all these dirty, antediluvian, old Russians who come to our house. And I hope God will fulfill my prayer! Oh! thank you, my God — here is another article of my prayers fulfilled.

Puis entre la vicomtesse Vigier fardée horriblement, *méme hideusement*, j'ai rougi parce que je croyais qu'elle n'a pas rendu la visite à maman et ne l'ai pas saluée, derrière mon dos je l'entends s'adresser à maman, lui tendant la main avec une amabilité extrême, elle demanda si c'était maman qui vint chez elle puis qu'elle l'a cherchée à la villa Meynadier, qu'elle ne savait où. Et encore une quantité de choses. On parla chapeaux. Elle dit enfin qu'elle espérait que maman voudrait bien compter cela pour une visite, que ce n'est pas sa faute et qu'elle espère l'année prochaine etc. etc. car elle part demain. Je suis très satisfaite. Je croyais qu'elle ne voulait pas rendre visite mais elle n'en a pas l'air, elle est charmante bien que ridiculement dressed et painted. Enfin nous avons une connaissance du monde, pas tous ces gens sales et antédiluviens russes, vieux, qui viennent chez nous. Et j'espère que Dieu remplira ma prière ! Oh ! merci mon Dieu, voilà encore un article de mes prières rempli.

Ah! now comes — (here I was interrupted by Madame de Daillens who came in; we chatted for some time; she is very nice to me, she speaks to me as to an equal in age; I like her well enough).

Ah ! maintenant vient, (ici je fus interrompue par Mme de Daillens qui entra, nous avons causé quelque temps, elle est très gentille avec moi, elle me parle comme à une égale d'âge, je l'aime assez).

I resume, then — now comes the great prayer: to know the Duke, for tomorrow is the pigeon shooting. No, I can no longer express myself well; I have lost the words — yesterday I had them. I say only that tomorrow is the pigeon shooting.

Je reprends donc, maintenant vient la grande prière, c'est de connaître le duc car demain c'est le Tir, non je ne puis plus bien m'exprimer, j'ai perdu l'expression, hier je l'avais. Je dis seulement que *demain le Tir aux pigeons .*
