Fine weather. Maman is no better — on the contrary. Oh! my God, relieve her. To the promenade on horseback. I went to the Var and took a long riding lesson, then a turn on the promenade. I spoke with several acquaintances. Rather satisfied; the sun was scorching, but toward five o'clock it was very pleasant. There were many people on horseback.
In the evening I had an arithmetic lesson to prepare; I could not understand it, I was in a dreadful state, I cried — truly, I cried; I did not know what to do, above all because I told myself that if I managed this lesson without asking Mademoiselle for anything, I would be Duchess of Hamilton, etc. — otherwise, no.
That is why I tormented myself so horribly, but I succeeded. Oh! Lord, if it were true — everything is in Your hands.
[In the margin: The white dresses arrived from Paris.]
I stayed from half past seven until half past nine preparing this lesson; ten times I wanted to give up, but I forced myself and I succeeded. If at first you do not succeed, try, try, try again. I shall always follow this proverb — one must begin again a hundred times if need be, but do it. Christ said, "Knock, and it shall be opened unto you." Oh! my God, I pray to You and You will give me what I ask!... My God, grant my prayer, I beseech You! I love him so — again today he appeared in my imagination, with his sovereign manner. No one sits like him; he has a way entirely like a king's, when he is in his carriage. I cannot describe it, but I picture him to myself. I know only that I adore him, him alone, and that I suffer from not seeing him. But God is so good! Oh! let me see him on horseback — the only place where my blushing will not be seen.
