It rains almost all the time.
In the morning I looked up "Hamilton" in Bouillet's dictionary and read everything; then I saw "town in England" with the fine castle of the Duke of Hamilton, etc., etc... These words finished me — my heart was pounding, because everything I read about other Hamiltons, what do I care? But when I saw "Duke" — there is only one, and he is the one I love! I nearly fainted. How strange — his name alone, what an effect it produces on me. If I read "Boreel," it would leave me quite indifferent. I sat down at the table covering my face with my hands; I could do nothing. Oh! if he knew! If he knew that upon seeing his name I nearly faint! [Crossed out: Oh, how I love him!]
Every time I must say the word "duke" in any lesson I blush impossibly — it is so tiresome. I believe Mlle Collignon sees it. But truly his name alone produces a magical effect on me. It overwhelms me, and I love it.
Maman today made her confession; tomorrow she will take communion.
To the promenade (vicuna outfit) in the half-open carriage; I had my waterproof, and it was raining in fine drops. I do not know why the Marquis de Bellevue greets me. He has not been introduced to me — he knows Maman, Mlle Billamois. Not many people. There is a matinee at the Cercle Massena.
In the evening to the Italian Theater (violet dress — the whole effect quite good). A great many people, but society was not there. They were giving for the first time La Forza del Destino by Verdi; they say he was present.
It is the first time I see this opera. I liked it. Gabrielli came to see us in the box. He spoke of Paris, of the Bois de Boulogne, and asked if we are going in the spring. I should so like to go, because I believe the Duke of Hamilton is there. I would see him at the Bois — but still unknown to him! Oh! my God, help me! Grant him to me. I love him. Oh! make him love me too. Thou canst do all things, oh! my God.
