Fine weather. Maman was in Monaco yesterday; she saw Boreel and spoke with him. Gouchkevitch said he was afraid at supper that Boreel might fight with Gagarin over Prussia — he was so nasty, mean. In the morning we spoke of him at home. To the promenade at three o'clock, having finished everything (vicuna outfit) — a great many people. I did not see either of them; that makes two days now — it is sad. Boreel no doubt at the matinee at the Cercle Massena; it is Saturday. Around six, Maman wanted to go to the matinee. We entered together and made one tour of the room — we were overwhelmed with greetings. Our entrance caused a stir; we stayed only two minutes, and everyone was looking at us, because we merely entered, glanced around, and left. There were quite a lot of people; we were approached from all sides. Maman took Nagornoff's arm, and I took Mlle Antonsky's. We went back out. I did not see Boreel; he was no doubt in one of the small salons, which we did not enter. The general impression was very good — I am very pleased. [Crossed out: I tell everyone.] Our day is Monday — I have already told a good many people. How glad I am; at least this way we shall have acquaintances. Truly I am very satisfied.
I write noticeably better.
Oh! how happy I am — I have almost everything I ask for. Oh! my God. Thank you! Lord, arrange it so that the Duke be introduced to us, I beseech Thee. Boreel too, because although he greets Maman, it is not enough; I should like him to know me as well.
In the evening to the Opera (black silk dress, low-cut in front with a muslin collar, very fine; hair up with gold circlet, no ornament — very fine indeed): "Ruy Blas" and "Nelly." But the pity is that no one from society was there. The theater was full enough, but empty — no one to look at me. I was very well dressed — simple, comme il faut!
