Very fine weather. We went out in the carriage with iron masks and very pretty white oriental cloaks, with an enormous quantity of bouquets. We made the rounds five or six times, following the endless line of carriages. Today there were even more people. They threw us a quantity of small and large bouquets. On the grandstand at the Place de la Prefecture stood nearly all of society; they threw us large bouquets. All the people we know by sight smiled at us and showered us with flowers. A young man with four horses and postilions presented me, through his servant, with a cone of sweets and a bouquet.

Temps très beau. Nous allâmes en voiture avec des masques de fer et des manteaux orientaux blancs très jolis, avec une quantité énorme de bouquets, nous fîmes les tours cinq ou six fois en suivant la file des voitures qui était sans fin. Aujourd'hui il y avait encore plus de monde. On nous jetait une quantité de petits et de grands bouquets. A l'estrade de la place de la Préfecture se trouvait presque toute la société, ils nous jetèrent des grands bouquets. Toutes les personnes que nous connaissons de vue nous souriaient et nous inondaient de fleurs. Un jeune homme avec quatre chevaux et postillons, me présenta à moi, par son domestique, un cornet de bonbons et un bouquet.

I threw bouquets and confetti for the sheer pleasure of it, only at the crowd. The cavalcade passed us at a gallop. Boreel was the same as on Sunday; I threw bouquets at him — with one hand he held his horse, with the other he hastened to catch my bouquets (at a gallop). He was looking at me. [One line crossed out.] After two rounds the cavalcade divided — the respectable ones left, the disreputable ones remaining. I had an enormous amount of fun. I threw flowers to all of society — they almost spoke to me.

Je jetais pour le plaisir des bouquets, des confettis, seulement à la foule. La cavalcade nous passa au galop. Boreel était la même chose que dimanche, je lui jetai des bouquets, d'une main il tenait son cheval, de l'autre il s'empressait d'attraper mes bouquets (en galopant). Il me regardait. [Une ligne cancellée] Après avoir fait deux tours la cavalcade se divisa, les bons s'en allèrent, les mauvais restant. Je me suis énormément amusée. J'ai jeté des fleurs à toute la société, ils me parlaient presque.

Then home around six o'clock. Only one regret remains — that it is over. Ah! no, there is a greater one, an enormous one — that the Duke of Hamilton did not take part. Gioia was not there either.

Puis à la maison vers les six heures. Il ne reste qu'un regret, c'est que c'est fini. Ah ! non il y en a un plus grand, un énorme, c'est que le duc de Hamilton n'y prenait pas part. Gioia n'y était pas non plus.

With what eagerness he gathered up the bouquets I threw him. This gave me great pleasure.

Avec quel empressement il ramassait les bouquets que je lui jetais. Cela m'a fait un grand plaisir.

Today was a day very well spent. In the carriage we were: Maman, Sophie, Dina and myself; Baron Bach for part of the time, then Tarnakoff, but he not for long.

La journée d'aujourd'hui a été très bien employée. En voiture, nous étions, maman, Sophie, Dina et moi, le baron Bach une partie du temps, puis Tarnakoff, mais lui pas longtemps.

We drove around the whole town. Despite all the arguments I presented, saying that it is very improper to take Dina to see "La Belle Helene," she went this evening.

Nous fîmes le tour de toute la ville. Malgré toutes les raisons que je présentais, en disant que c'est très inconvenant de mener Dina voir "La Belle Hélène", elle y est allée ce soir.
