Now I know why the Duke does not wish to see me. He is too occupied with Gioia. I had believed he would leave her, but that was only a dream. She knows him too well. He is too accustomed to her, and she has so many wiles to hold him, so many tricks!

Maintenant je sais pourquoi le duc ne veut pas me voir. Il est trop occupé avec Gioia. J'avais cru qu'il la laisserait, mais cela n'était qu'un rêve. Elle le connaît trop. Il est trop habitué à elle et elle a tant de moyens pour le retenir et elle a tant de ruses !

And yet, just now, he looked at me and I blushed. Perhaps he sensed that I love him. How strange!

Et pourtant tout à l'heure, il m'a regardée et j'ai rougi. Peut-être a-t-il senti que je l'aime. Comme c'est drôle !

In the evening, at the Cercle de la Méditerranée,1 a soirée given by the Vicomtesse Vigier: La Sonnambula by Bellini.2 I had on a delightful pink dress, décolleté, and a high coiffure that suited me very well.

Le soir, au cercle de la Méditerranée, soirée donnée par la vicomtesse Vigier : "La somnabule" de Bellini. J'avais une déli­cieuse robe rose, décolletée, une coiffure haute et qui m'allait très bien.

Vigier's voice was magnificent — a little worn, a little shrill, but magnificent.

La voix de Vigier magnifique, un peu usée, un peu criarde, mais magnifique.

All of Nice was there, except Boreel.

Tout Nice y était, excepté Boreel.

But I was so happy to have seen the Duke that I did not even wish to see him for my own sake; rather, I wished he had seen me for his, for I was truly very pretty.

Mais j'étais si heureuse d'avoir vu le duc que je ne dési­rais même pas le voir pour moi, mais j'aurai voulu qu'il me vit pour lui, car j'étais vraiment très jolie.
