The day of the Var races. The greatest day of the season for me.

Le jour des courses du Var. Le plus grand jour de la saison pour moi.

In the morning, about ten horses passed before the villa, led by jockeys. My God, what is more beautiful than a racehorse?

Le matin sont passés devant la villa une dizaine de chevaux conduits par des jockeys. Mon Dieu, qu'y a-t-il de plus beau qu'un cheval de course ?

At one in the afternoon, here I am at the races. An enormous crowd, very elegant.

A une heure de l'après-midi me voici aux courses. Enormément de monde très élégant.

I walked about for a while, then at the grandstand I spoke with the Howards, with Gagarin; I bet and lost a box of bonbons.

Je me suis promenée un moment, puis à la tribune, j'ai parlé avec les Howard, avec Gagarine; j'ai parié et j'ai perdu une boite de bonbons.

The Duke is race commissioner,¹ yet I did not see him. I was in the grandstand with the finest society of Nice.

Le duc est pourtant commissaire aux courses et je ne l'ai pas vu. J'étais sur la tribune avec le plus beau monde de Nice.

I saw Boreel; he was very well dressed, but he is less handsome than the Duke. He is decidedly too stout.

J'ai vu Boreel, il était très bien habillée, mais il est moins bien que le duc. Il est décidément trop gros.

And yet, the Duke is stouter than him — but I love him, that's all there is to it!

Cependant, le duc est plus gros que lui, mais je l'aime, lui, voilà !

Ah! if only he would abandon that woman! I saw her in black, in a closed carriage, alone; she did not come to the races. Where is she?

Ah ! s'il pouvait abandonner cette femme ! Je l'ai vue en noir dans une voiture fermée, seule; elle n'est pas venue aux courses. Où est-elle ?

And I did not see the Duke today. Grant that I may see him tomorrow at the pigeon shooting.

Et je n'ai pas vu le duc aujourd'hui. Faites que je le vois demain au Tir au pigeons.
