In the carriage, I saw the Duke of Hamilton. The first time in five weeks. He overtook us on his way to Gioia's. I began tapping my foot; I was blushing, but less than usual — thank God, it was nearly raining and the landau was half-closed. All of a sudden, I see the Duke of Hamilton.
Mlle Collignon, seeing that I was blushing, said to me in an almost severe tone: "Don't do that, Marie, it irritates me so." He passed quickly, looking straight ahead.

Notes

Mlle Collignon was Marie's English governess who played a significant role in her education and social development.
