Portrait d'Olga (1875)
Také známý jako: portrait d'Olga, le portrait d'Olga, Portrait of Olga
Overview
The Portrait d'Olga is a portrait of Olga Sapogenikoff, begun on 29 March 1875 in Nice jointly by Marie and Marie Sapogenikoff (Olga's sister), taken up in colour by Marie alone on 20 September 1875, and never finished. Marie herself later wrote in the margin of the 20 September entry that none of this was completed (043.0249).
Marie and this work
Marie is sixteen. A marginal note in the manuscript reads "Du joli travail" (030.0404). On 4 April (031.0058) she means to "finir le portrait d'Olga" after inviting the girls to the next day's lesson.
A marginal note she added later (043.0249) says: "Tout ça n'a jamais été achevé ni même continué. So the Olga portrait was a large oval, charcoal in the spring, colour in September, and then dropped. Her own later summary of her training says that between fourteen and seventeen she did "pas un trait" (076.0447), which the 1875 entries contradict; the discrepancy is Marie's, and is recorded here rather than corrected.
