Overview

An English gentleman whom Marie meets at Spa in the summer of 1874 and who rides as a gentleman rider at the Spa races. Mon Journal t.3 index: «Wheelwright, 249». No first name is given and nothing outside the diary identifies him.

In Marie's diary

• 1874-06-28 (020.0420-0421, Spa): at Gambart's château d'Alsa, at the thin dinner, «un Anglais dont j'oublie le nom au moment de l'écrire; le voici, Wheelwright»; in the afternoon she rows on the lake before the château and earns «les approbations de cet anglais Wheel, etc.», then climbs the hill with Gambart's party «causant avec M. Wheelwright» in English. Marie notes of him «un homme qui n'a pas un os qui ne soit brisé en montant des chevaux».
• 1874-08-02 (022.0364): at the band, «Wheelwright avec son magnifique lévrier vient nous parler, il court demain.»
• 1874-08-03 (022.0375, 022.0378-0368): the races; «les gentlemen riders, Wheelwright montait un ravissant cheval noir, âgé de trois ans, et il était le mieux habillé»; after a protest by a baron about a possible cut, with several false starts, «on donna le prix à Wheelwright», who is carried to the weighing enclosure «couvert de bravos et de cris».
