Overview

A Serbian diplomat family in Paris in 1883–84: M. Marinovitch, «ministre de Serbie et beau-frère de la princesse» Karageorgevitch (097.0362), his wife Mme Marinovitch, and their son, «le jeune Marinovitch», 33 years old and secretary of embassy. The Mon Journal indexes distinguish them: «Marinovitch (M.), ministre de Serbie» and «(Mme)» (t.15, pp.146, 148); «Marinovitch (M.), fils du ministre de Serbie» and «(Mme, mère)» (t.16, pp.34, 62, 112).

Relevance to Marie

Stub replaced. Forenames are not in the diary or the indexes. A candidate for the father is Jovan Marinović (1821–1893), Serbian prime minister 1873–74, who was educated in Paris and died at Villers-sur-Mer (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jovan_Marinović), but no source found puts him in Paris as minister in 1883, so the identification is not made.

Identity uncertain

We are not sure of the forenames of the minister, his wife and son. The diary gives only the surname, the post (minister of Serbia in Paris), the family tie to the Karageorgevitch princess, and the son's age (33 in October 1883) and rank (embassy secretary). Jovan Marinović (1821–1893), a Serbian statesman with Paris ties, is a possible candidate for the father, but we found no source placing him as Serbia's envoy in Paris in 1883 (sources checked: Mon Journal t.15–16 indexes, en.wikipedia). If you can identify this family, we would be glad to hear from you.

References in Diary

Gambetta's funeral, 6 January 1883: Marie and her family watch the cortège from M. Marinovitch's windows at 240 rue de Rivoli, then the whole circle lunches «chez Mme Marinovitch» (097.0362, 097.0377). In September–October 1883 the son dines with the Bashkirtseffs, «le fils du ministre de Serbie, beau-frère de la princesse Karageorgevitch» (101.0366), and there is talk of a marriage with Dina: «il a trente-trois ans, il est secrétaire d'ambassade, il est très bien et il la trouve charmante», but the family thinks Dina is rich (102.0038). On 1 January 1884 the Bashkirtseffs dine at the Karageorgevitchs' with «les Marinovitch» (102.0629).
