Identity

William Ewart Gladstone (1809–1898), Liberal prime minister of the United Kingdom (1868–74, and later). Marie names him in a joke about an English governess whom she makes «reine of Scotland» and draws «dans des conspirations avec Gladstone, Dukes of Cambridge and Argyll and John Bull» (012.0198, 13 Nov 1873; t.2 index «Gladstone, 173»), and in 1879 she reads «le compte rendu d'un dîner chez Emile de Girardin en l'honneur de M. Gladstone» (086.0409).

Miss Gladstone (015.0032)

On 4 January 1874 Marie tells papa about English wedding customs and «les cadeaux qu'avait reçus Miss Gladstone» (015.0032; t.3 index «Gladstone (Miss), 8-9»). This is the prime minister's elder daughter Agnes Gladstone (1842–1931), who married the Rev. Edward Charles Wickham on 27 December 1873 (thepeerage.com p21686; Wikipedia, «Edward Wickham (priest)»), a week before. The paragraph is tagged here for want of a file of her own (one mention).
