Identity

Gentleman at theater in Nice society.

Identification (2026-10-21, RSR): probably (0.85) Ernest Gambart (1814–1902), the Belgian-born art dealer and print publisher of London, who after retiring in 1870 lived mainly in Nice (villa Les Palmiers) and summered at Spa in his Château d'Alsa, where he received artists (Wikipedia, «Ernest Gambart»; BRAFA, F. De Potter, «Ernest Gambart (1814–1902), a life in the art business»). The diary fits: the Tome 4 name index of Mon Journal has «Gambart (M.), Belge» (and «Gambart (fils)»); Marie sees him in Nice (February 1874) and at Spa in July 1874 gives soirées «chez lui» with singers (021.0391, 021.0329), «Malézieux et sa femme logent au château même» (021.0396), and he travels with «sa suite» of performers (021.0547).

Villa Gambart (Nice)

On 18 January 1874, driving to the races, Marie and her party «avions déjà passé la villa Gambart» (015.0236): the house served as a landmark on the road. If he is Ernest Gambart, this is his Nice villa (Les Palmiers; see the identification above). The former entry VILLA_GAMBART, filed as a person, is merged here.
