Baccarat

Overview

Baccarat, the French crystal manufacturer, founded in 1764 in the Lorraine town of Baccarat after the closure of the Rozières saltworks freed up the wood of the Vosges forest (Wikipedia, «Baccarat (company)», https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baccarat_(company)). Marie means its Paris shop, on the boulevard (024.0164: «sur le boulevard»). Not a person.

Relevance to Marie

• 28 May 1874. After the exhibition for the Alsace-Lorraine refugees at the Corps législatif, Marie and the deacon go to Baccarat; «les cristaux y sont magnifiques, nous fîmes inscrire pour plus de trois mille francs» (019.0377).
• 23 September 1874. Her aunt chooses everyday crystal and table garniture there; «tout cela coûte cher parce qu'on choisit ce qu'il y a de mieux» (024.0070, reader footnote).
• 29 September 1874. Marie buys a cup at Baccarat on the boulevard for her aunt's name-day, and the waiter breaks it at once (024.0164).
