This thematic tag collects diary paragraphs where Marie looks at her own face, figure and beauty, or at other people's: the mirror, the verdict "je suis jolie" or "je suis laide", a new hairstyle, her arms and shoulders, the fear of fading. Her looks are, for Marie, capital to be accounted for as carefully as her voice or her talent, and her moods follow her reflection.
Tagging Criteria
- Tag Marie judging her own face, complexion, figure or body ("je suis jolie", "laide et fanée").
- Tag a mirror scene, a hairstyle, a compliment or criticism of her looks, and her reaction to it.
- Tag someone else's beauty or plainness assessed as beauty (a rival, a suitor, a woman at a ball).
- Tag anxiety over weight, thinness, pallor or ageing as a matter of looks.
- Do not tag clothes, hats and dressmakers: that is Clothing & Fashion, even when she looks well in the dress.
- Do not tag a model's head or body studied in the studio (Her Art).
- Do not tag illness read from a face or a body (Health & Illness), unless the paragraph is about how she looks.
- Do not tag "belle" used of landscapes, music, pictures or weather.
- The bar is that the paragraph is substantively about the theme; a passing word never qualifies. A paragraph takes at most three themes.
Common French Cues
- Adjectives: jolie, belle, laide, ravissante, fanée, pâle, maigre, grosse, charmante, plate
- Nouns: la figure, le visage, le teint, les cheveux, la coiffure, les bras, le buste, la taille, la glace
- Phrases: "je me trouve", "je me suis regardée", "on me trouve", "ma beauté"
- False friends: glace = mirror, ice or a window pane; figure = face, but also a character in a story; toilette = outfit, not looks
Notable Patterns
- The mirror recurs at moments of crisis: a bad face in the glass is as much a verdict on her prospects as on her skin.
- Appearance meets Marriage and Love whenever her looks are weighed as an asset on the marriage market.
- From about 1880 the same paragraphs are often about illness; tag Health as well when a symptom is named.
