The prince Marie confronted is August Karl Prinz zu Hohenlohe-Oehringen (1854–1884), son of Hugo, 4th Prince of Hohenlohe-Oehringen and Duke of Ujest. Auguste died at age thirty in San Remo, likely of tuberculosis — the same disease affecting Marie, who had noted his "sickly skin" and "suffering eyes." His brother, likely Friedrich (b. 1855), is the one Marie nicknamed "Gans." ↩
