The prince Marie confronted is August Karl Prinz zu Hohenlohe-Oehringen (1854-1884), son of Hugo, 4th Prince of Hohenlohe-Oehringen and Duke of Ujest. The Hohenlohe-Oehringen were a prominent German princely family with vast estates in Silesia and Wurttemberg. Auguste died at age 30 in San Remo, likely of tuberculosis -- the same disease affecting Marie, who noted his "sickly skin" and "suffering eyes." His brother, likely Friedrich (b. 1855), is the one Marie nicknamed "Gans." ↩
