Faire tourner les tables: table-turning, a spiritualist parlour pastime in which the sitters rest their hands on a table and wait for it to move. ↩
Bouts rimés: a parlour game in which rhyme words are given in advance and verses must be composed on them. ↩
The edition prints a note at the foot of the page here (Mon Journal t.5, Tome5.pdf p.157), without saying whose it is, apparently Marie's own jocular afterthought: «Le lendemain d'un grand orage on a dit que la tour avait craqué et que le châtelain n'était plus qu'un peu de cendre.» («The day after a great storm it was said that the tower had cracked and that the châtelain was no more than a little ash.») The tower of the verses is probably Audiffret's (see the verses at 035.0100–0101). ↩
Douraque: Marie's French spelling of Russian durak (дурак), «fool», used for the rhyme. ↩
Pauvre Jacques: a popular sentimental romance of the 1780s by the Marquise de Travanet. ↩
