Église de la Madeleine (Paris)
Également connu sous : la Madeleine, église de la Madeleine, Eglise de la Madeleine, La Madeleine
Overview
The Madeleine is the large neoclassical Catholic church, built like a Greek temple, at the head of the rue Royale on the place de la Madeleine in Paris (8th arrondissement), in a fashionable quarter. For Marie it is the church of Paris's fashionable Sunday and of the rendez-vous with Cassagnac and Multedo in 1878. «La Madeleine» in her text can also mean the nearby post office (see below) or the quarter.
Relevance to Marie
Spring 1878 is the church's main moment in the diary: she goes to mass there (078.0468, 079.0064, 079.0360), arranges rendez-vous in front of it with Multedo (079.0156, 079.0260), and weighs going «pour y voir Cassagnac», who is seen there by the Mouzays (079.0056, 079.0061, 079.0362, 079.0495, 079.0499). In July 1878 the Figaro clipping about the requiem for Queen Mercedes of Spain at the Madeleine is pasted into the notebook (081.0315, 081.0325). Earlier, in 1874, she passes it and sees Wittgenstein in a fiacre (019.0255) and in September 1874 the wedding of Lewin and «la Durand» (024.0086) and of the sister of «Ferry» (024.0112, invitation by Ferry) are held there; in 1877 she goes with the baroness «pour voir les élégantes» (073.0004).
