Overview

Nikolay Platonovich Ogarev (1813-1877), Russian poet and radical publicist, Herzen's lifelong friend and co-editor of the émigré journal Kolokol, in exile in England from 1856 (Wikipedia, «Nikolay Ogarev»). Marie calls him «Ogareff, le socialiste» (024.0204). He appears in October 1874 only through the letters he writes to Makaroff, the Bashkirtseffs' acquaintance at Nice: in one of them, in a fit of irritation (he was, Marie notes, very ill), he says he bit Turgenev's ear (024.0204, 024.0230); Makaroff, who takes everything seriously, is grieved that «un homme comme Ogareff a pu se porter à un acte d'aussi grossière violence» (024.0235), while Mme Sapogenikoff and Yourkoff, who know all his correspondence with Ogareff, are amused. The Mon Journal t.4 index has «Ogareff (M.), 165, 168-169». He is not the General Ogareff of 066.0242, see OGAREFF.
