Overview

A young French diplomat in the Bashkirtseffs' Paris circle in 1883–1884: «un petit attaché au Ministère des Affaires Etrangères» (099.0171, 21 April 1883), «M. de Rochefort (pas Henri) qu'on vient de nommer secrétaire d'ambassade à Rio de Janeiro» (103.0079, 19 January 1884), who «part pour Rio de Janeiro, pendant deux ans» (103.0180). Not the radical journalist Henri Rochefort (ROCHEFORT). The Mon Journal indexes: t.15 «Rochefort (M. de), fonctionnaire : 150-151, 225, 235»; t.16 «Rochefort (M. de), diplomate : 127, 134, 137-138». The t.15 pages 150–151 are about Henri Rochefort the journalist («Quant à Rochefort on le voit écumer», January 1883), an index slip.

We are not sure who this is: the diary never gives his first name, and no list of the French legation at Rio de Janeiro in 1884 was found (web search 2026-10-22; the Annuaire diplomatique et consulaire of 1884–1885 would settle it). If you can identify him, we would be glad to hear from you.
